New Staff Selection

Pretty unimportant corrections honestly. As in, using Toure back there in the orbit versus the small ways (and small percentage of plays called per game) in the way they do it doesn't make me go "Holy f****** s***, Willy Korn is going to change everything!!!!11"

I've said since the announcement of the four firings: I doubt we really change the scheme much from what we've been doing.

The offensive line is a much, much bigger fish to fry than our scheme. That, and QB play that leads to inopportune turnovers.
Can't argue with any of that. I would posit that if 1)Frost truly hands the reins over to Korn (if he's the guy), and 2)the offensive line is blocking better than they did this year, we'll be running A LOT more option than we have under Frost so far.

Which would bum me out, and would be weird considering that Torres and Haarberg aren't that kind of QB.

You got Smothers. He can do it really well. But if he goes down, then what?

Then it's like the opposite of when Smothers or McNuggets have come in when Martinez is injured; then we have a modified game plan of more of like the "Mack Brown at Texas" spread offense scheme for those games?

It'll be interesting to see what's ultimately decided. Not sure if Ricky Brumfield remains under consideration.

With Bill Busch's biggest asset being evaluating talent, is off the field continuing as an analyst the best position for him? And, Ron Brown continuing as he has? Another possibility, could different aspects of special teams be divided among a couple of the coaches (Ex. Beckton, Brumfield) in a configuration? Beckton has done so well with tight ends...I don't know how well he'd do with RB's or if he'd be interested.

Special Teams definitely is needing attended to . While a the same time, we can't afford to neglect Running Backs...  :dunno

I think there's enough room in the offense for a QB that isn't quick like Smothers. McCall did a lot to make it go - he's very much a dual threat. Conversely, Coastal's level of play did drop markedly when McCall when down, so you do have a point there.

I thought  Haarberg had a decent set of wheels under him? He rushed a lot in high school.

SF specifically said he was more than likely going to hire an OC before staff for the reasons stated.  Does this mean his OC has been hired and not announced due to still playing?
With the talk of Mickey Joseph getting hired, I wonder if Beckton will be the OC? Or maybe Joseph as OC/WR?

I like Haarberg's mobility, but asking him to run a lot of option would not be a recipe for success.  Given his size, he probably has decent straight ahead running ability, but not the quickness needed to run option.

I wasn’t focusing on 30 years ago (pre-BCS I guess). I was making the point that changing conferences has more than just a little impact on a program’s “direct success.” Outside of additional money, only a few schools have improved, sustainable on-field results after changing. And none of those have won a league title since VA Tech did after they realigned in the mid-2000s.

Most schools that have switched conferences in the 21st century are not historically great schools.

A&M is performing just as good if not better than they did in the Big XII.

Mizzou is performing just as good if not slightly worse than they did in the Big XII (looking at longer trends, not flash-in-the-pan moments).

We were performing roughly as well until non-conference related poor decisions took us down a few notches.

Colorado is as good as they were in the Big XII.

Rutgers and Maryland aren't doing any better or worse than they were before.

So on and so forth.

Has anyone considered the possibility of Frost coaching RBs?
The easiest area to improve our W-L is through ST play.  It can be improved regardless of new scheme/technique. It just needs to be coached.  As shown above, Frost and Co have and continue to use ST's as way to reward walk-ons and back ups with playing time. That's gotta change.  I'd really like Busch.  Great recruiter AND if filks will look at his record at NU as a ST coordinator and safety coach, it's actually pretty impressive.  He gets grief for working under Cally.

I don't know the general consensus, but I for one don't think we actually got the guys we set out to get for assistants.  I see these hires as 2nd best if that.  Whipple might be ok, but don't see any kind of wow factor in him.  Raiola, seems like were just recruiting his nephew to be our QB someday.  The only hire so far that makes sense is Joseph.  So far I would grade these hires as a C-.  Mickey Joseph is an A+, but the others are well below what I think most expectations would have been.  When I heard that we were interviewing both Harrell and Whipple this weekend in Arizona, I realized Frost and Co struck out on others.  Prove otherwise and I might listen!  I think we are in for a truly disappointing 2022 season.  I think we see more leave and we might not reach the level we are at right now.  Trying to remain positive, but just not seeing anything that says we are going to be great next season with these hires.  I think Mickey can bring in talent, but that talent better be Big 10 ready, otherwise we are in for another 3-9 or 4-8 season.
I’m dying to hear who you wanted as your #1 choices across the board.

Yes he was a decent runner in high school. He’s a long strider and it doesn’t appear he is running fast but he eats up a lot of ground in the open field. He may not be the most elusive QB though.

Disprove my claim which I haven't proved and I'll listen! You may ultimately be right but I don't think we have any reason to be too down about our new coaches. Time will tell and we'll likely know nine months from now.
