Well, our response can reflect the degree of the violation. Your example of "kill all XX" would earn a ban. Arguing with another member then using "XX" as an insult and a third party member reporting the post, should result in the post being removed with a PM to the offending member but no warning points. Heck, we removed the gif of a deer head exploding. I think it is fair to make degrading homosexuality out-of-bounds.
Was that in the shed, or regular forum?

Look, all I'm getting at is we need a clear delineation going forward on what is/isn't acceptable. In my humble opinion, what Knapp said was no worse than people calling each other bitches, dicks, and pussies, all (currently) accepted insults in the thread, all clearly meant as a derogatory term in reference of a particular gender.

And I think that's what the other guys are getting at too.
Good point. If these terms are clearly sexist. Maybe the distinct is if some reports them? Not sure. The Woodshed is definitely a place where there should be a good amount of leeway.

I think the difference is, that they're accepted vulgarities, and frankly, nobody cares because we're adults. I have no clue why darkhorse even reported knapp's post when he wasn't even involved with the conversation. It comes across as whitesplaining.

Either way, the shed's been an "anything goes" (outside of voilent threats) environment for years, so I get why the people are restless.

Yeah, I wonder about this. I wonder if darkhorse has some issue with Knapp. Or maybe he thinks Knapp should be held to a higher standard, given that he was a mod just a short time ago. I also wonder why Knapp made such a big deal over the whole matter. And why a half dozen posters got incensed over such a trivial issue. One thought comes to mind that answers all these questions: Offseason.

WE NEED SOME FOOTBALL, DAMN IT!

Folks, I think the easiest way to handle this is to recall Polo and the "butt-hurt" business. Nothing wrong with the phrase - it was the way it was used, which was as a personal attack. The easiest way to discern if it's a personal attack is to look to whether the comment in which the alleged insult was made advanced the discussion or was simply a "shot" at the poster. If the former, no harm. If the latter, time to take action - a PM or gentle reminder (at least at first) to attach the post and not the poster.

Now, having said that, in the Woodshed it's kind of an "anything goes" setting, and people opt-in to the Woodshed. They are warned to have a thick skin. All we've outlawed in there are threats, libel, bigotry, and inappropriate sexual content. While I personally find the "You're gay" thing offensive and unnecessary, it's been part of the fabric (see the threads - in jest, admittedly - in which you pick a member and say something bad about them) of that sub-forum.

Where we would draw the line in the 'Shed is if it becomes harassment - someone constantly going after a member and alleging he or she is gay. Outside the 'Shed, it should be addressed immediately if it's used for a personal attack.

Thanks AR. That's kinda what I was getting at, but since I'm one of the junior mods, I know i'm still learning the ropes.

For what it's worth, when I read the exchange between knapplc and kchusker_chris I had absolutely no doubt how it was intended. Those two were arguing and taking shots at one another. Lance can protest, but it was clearly a personal attack. But as I recall, it was kchusker that fired the first shot - could be wrong. Regardless, I didn't do anything when I read it because it was the Woodshed. Outside the 'Shed, I would have addressed it. But it was a shot to say that kchusker_chris is gay.

Anyway, it's addressed and cleared up, and Lance has been gracious enough to try and sooth members' feelings and concerns. If members want to b!^@h, they can, but I think NUance has it right - WE NEED FOOTBALL!!!!
