The guy who killed himself that I posted about in the Shed the other day, this is him: LINK

My little town is still reeling over this. I am still reeling over this. He was one of our leading citizens, and a friend of just about everyone. A friend and colleague of mine. More details than what I posted in the Shed: He has (had) three high school age daughters, a senior who just graduated, and twin sophomores. This past Sunday Brett and his wife hosted a large graduation party at his home for his daughter who just graduated from high school. Later that day he drove down by the Mississippi River, and shot himself.

/sad

edit: Brett suffered these past several months from severe Tinnitus--ringing in his ears. He told me that he would go days on end without so much as an hour of sleep. The Tinnitus was the root cause of his depression and mental problems.

That's something I don't think I can even comprehend. Can't imagine being in those shoes -- someone who knew him, or his family. Very sorry to hear.

I bacame an acquaintance of Brad Delp, the lead singer for the band Boston from running their message board (long story). Absoulely the nicest person I've ever encountered. He had fame, fortune, incredible talent. A few years ago, he committed suicide. A history of clinical depression. It was the cause of his first divorce; he and his ex remained incredible friends after the divorce.

No one can understand what depression can do until they see it happen to someone they know. Always very sad.

MOD QUESTION: To move a couple of offending posts to a different existing thread, we first Split the offending posts into their own temporary thread LINK and then Merge the new temporary thread with the Offending Posts thread LINK.

My question is this: Is there any reason not to place the temporary thread with the couple of offending posts here in the Mod forum for a few minutes, until it is merged? This would avoid having someone post in the temporary thread while it's being Merged.

I don't know squat about your specific unit but it has been my experience that when the furnace quits running it is almost always a bad thermocouple or temp sensor or purge sensor. I mention this because, if you're inclined to fix it yourself, you could buy all of those things for less money than a service call. Usually pretty simple to swap them out.

Yeah, the Junkyard. That'd be the place.

And I guess since it's the Junkyard it's okay to fool around merging/splitting threads and posts, etc.

I'm not going to tell you how to do your job, but I don't split them into their own thread first. I just select the posts and Move them to the Offending Posts thread. The thing that sucks about Move is you have to know the thread number. If I don't have it handy, I usually just right-click on the HuskerBoard.com link at the bottom of the page and open a new tab. Then I can navigate to the Offending Posts thread to get the thread number (4282 if you're curious. Or even if you're not, still the same). By finding it in a new tab, I don't have to navigate away from the posts I'm trying to move. Also, depending on your browser settings, your machine may remember that number for you so you don't have to remember it next time - if you can remember it starts with a 4, when you type the 4 it may save the rest for you in the auto-complete box.

Yeah -- hm, maybe I need to read these old guides. I've always just selected the offending posts, and moved to 4282. If you need to, you could make a note & lock the thread temporarily first while you do the cleanup, and then open it once cleanup is completed.

This isn't a problem--but rather just an odd little thing that I noticed:

  • When you post a status, and then immediately make a post in your own status, the board sends you to your own profile. In other words, immediately after making the second status post you end up on your profile page instead of on the main page as you would expect.
  • But if you post a status and then wait for a couple of minutes to make a second post in your status, you end up on the main page. Weird.

It's not a bug. It's a feature.

That is odd, but I would guess it has to do with the TTL (Time to Live) function of the board. We see it when we create blocks - in theory, if we set the TTL to 0 the changes from the code in the block should update immediately. In reality, it often doesn't update at all. We have to set it to 1 minute for it to work. After a minute, the changes "take". For example, when we update the side block that shows the previous and next games, it doesn't display for a minute - and it NEVER displays the changes if we leave it blank or at zero. I'm guessing that the board doesn't "register" the status update immediate, so it throws you to your profile thinking you WANT to make a status update.

Yeah, probably a feature.

A week after George Mason University renamed its law school to honor the recently departed Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, the Virginia public institution is calling for a slight do-over.

“The Antonin Scalia School of Law at George Mason University,” the Twitterverse quickly spotted, didn’t make for a good acronym. LINK

#ASSLaw. Bwahahaha! Awesome!!

That's where I went to law school, btw. I didn't post this on the public board since I don't generally disclose on HB that I'm a damned, dirty lawyer. (I prefer the image of Philip J. Fry, futuristic delivery boy.)
