If we want a legit chance at playoffs we have to run it up on everyone.

With the perception of the conference this is true. We can't afford to almost lose to a subpar team.

I would be really pissed if an undefeated, BIG champion NU did not make the playoffs, and a one loss no conference champion Alabama does.

Pissed, yes. Surprised, not so much.

I could see the SEC homers doing it to us.

That won't happen. An undefeated Big Ten team should automatically be included. Same goes for Pac-12, SEC, ACC, and Big XII
