I was taught that you still go back with the deepest route and shade towards that side with the qb looking that side. He stayed peeking into the pocket. 

He was.  7 should have passed the guy he ran with into the middle zone(Giffords) and took #2 who came across the field into 7's zone on the shallower post.   Gifford was yelling and pointing it out to him on the play as well
