Offroading/Rock crawling

Just wondering if there are any other Husker fans that like to enjoy the outdoors by climbing over it? I like to hear about new places to go and get info on other people's rig's, what works and what doesn't. We usually have organized trail runs once or twice a month if anybody is interested.

This is my 85 s-10 Blazer, wether you like Chevy's or not, this thing is only slightly modified and it has taken everything I have thrown at it for 8 years now, everything from mountains to moab. 2.8 liter and tranny are still original.

My best friend flew out from Lincoln..OMA actually and somehow convinced me to go out on Quads the day before my Honeymoon (As a Wedding present).

I'd never been on one before and about 5 miles into the Superstition Mts. (See Pics) I went uphill steep enough that mine rolled over front to back..I remember thinking I could catch it (By Bench pressing it by the handlebars) and make sure we got our deposit back..the came to my sences midair and pushed away, but landed on a rock formation that resembled a Rhinoceros horn and thought I lost a kidney..In fact, I told a guy at the Hot tub at the resort/casino we stayed at for the Honeymoon when he inquired about the giant black area around the cut area that my new bride had a gambling problem and I woke up in a tub full of ice (urban legend).

later, my Wife and I were riding down an elevator with two elderly ladies that kept staring at the scratches on my legs and arms and I was walking like Frankenstein...I winked at them and said, "It's our Honeymoon and She's sorta wild".

OK, by the end of summer I will be ready for some new tires for my DD and hunting rig. I've narrowed it down to either Cooper STT or BFG MT. Does anybody have any experience with these? Treadlife? Wet weather and snow/ice grip? I hunt out here in the sandhills and A/Ts just don't cut it when I need to climb something. Thanks.

I have the Coopers on my 87 Suburban and I have the BFG's on a 95 s-10 Blazer. I have had them for about a year and there are only two differences between them as far as I can tell. The Coopers cost a lot less but the BFG's look like they will last a couple months longer. Either way you go, MT's arn't going to last near as long as the AT's. If I had to chose, I think the cost of the Coopers beat's out the couple extra miles the BFG's give you. When the roads get icy I air them down a few PSI to get the extra traction. If you have the capability to air up at the end of the day when offroading, I run them at 17 pounds and have never had a problem. Hope this helps a little. Thanks for the reply. Hopefully talking about wheelin will help get at least a few of us on here through the off-season, it sure helps me.

The cost isn't an issue, on www.onlinetire.com is the lowest prices I have found that still offer road hazard. The Coopers are $146 and the BFGs are $150. The size I want is 32/11.50/15. Yeah, I know about all the mud tire b.s., low treadlife, can't drive on ice, bad in rain, loud. Not too worried about it. Just, rotate tires and check pressure, use your head and getting tires siped helps, and people that complain about tires being too loud need to shut up. If you want quiet tires then get some and stop wasting a good set of muds. Anyway, could you give me comparisons of the two in all the elements? Highway, light snow, deep snow, ice, rain, mud, whatever.

Oh yeah, what size or sizes are you running?

Wow! Do you get to Lincoln much? I could get you the Coopers for 40 bucks less a tire!

The Cooper's and BFG's that I have are both 31/11.5-15's. The tires I use on my Trail rig are Dayton Timberlines, They are 33/12.5-15's. Have you looked at this tires at all? I bought them used from a guy that had them on a daily driver. He had them for about a year and I have had them for 3. As far as I'm concerned, they are the best all around tire I have ever had! I have had them on rock's, snow, sand, hard packed dirt trails, and mud that came over the seats and they haven't failed me yet. As far as the performance of the other two, I think they pretty much perform identical. That's why I liked the Coopers, I can get them a lot cheaper. As long as you rotate them the wear will be close to the same. I think they both work fine in rain and snow. My road is usually littered with 2 to 3 foot drifts in the winter time and they both handle them fine. Even though they are MT's, I think both of their biggest faults are deep mud. They don't have near the performance of the Timberlines.

Do you go to Halsey National Forest? I try to get up there at least once a year.

 
Yeah I have looked at the Timberlines but I don't think they make them in the size I want. They are the off brand to the Firestone Destination MTs that are freakin' awsome. The Destinations are the #1 rated MT tire on tire rack right now. I am actually going to be moving to Lincoln hopefully in the next year or so. As far as Halsey, my friends and I used to go up there a couple times a year with our fourwheelers. Pretty good time especially at night. Halsey is only about an hour or so west of me here in Broken Bow. In the next few years hopefully I can afford to get a rig that is just for wheelin'. Back in the day i had a 79' Fullsize Bronco that was a blast. I have also had an 89' Toyota pickup with a 4 banger that damn near could go anywhere my fourwheeler could. Those little 'yotas are dang near bullet proof, you can abuse the hell out of them and they keep on tickin'. Are there many places around Lincoln to wheel? What price can you get the Coopers or BFGs at, 32/11.50/15?

I can get the Coopers and Timberline's for 100 bucks a tire. My tire guy can't give me a very good deal on BFG's so they are 150.

As far as offroad'n around Lincoln, not gonna happen. I have a membership at a place in Onawa, IA and we go rock climbing down at Tuttle Creek in Kansas. Onawa is a two hour drive and Tuttle is a 3 hour drive, but the are both a blast to wheel at.

 
I've never been rock crawling but wouldn't mind trying it. I would need to have a rig just for wheeling so that I don't destroy me DD. Through more looking around on the internet I have gotten really interested in the Maxxis Bighorns. They make the 32s and are less expensive than most of the other tires. Reviews have been very promising and treadlife seems to be on par with the Coopers. When I was in college at Milford my buddy bought some wheels and tires from Nebraska Tire in Seward and they were carrying Maxxis at that time. I thought about giving them a call on pricing. Or better yet looking at the Bighorns in person. Your price for the Coopers is amazing! Do you know for sure if the Timberlines come in 32s?

 
Yeah, it figures. Oh well, plent of other tires out there to choose from for sure. The Maxxis Bighorn are really cheap! That usually means a sh**ty tire but the reviews have been really good and like I said before, the treadlife seems to be on par with all the rest of the tires out there except maybe the BFGs or Firestone Destination MTs. They come siped too so thats good.

 
I've also been kinda looking at the Kumho KL71. Do you know anything about this tire? There have been lots of mixed reviews. Its funny what some people say about tires in their reviews, it makes me wonder how these people got a liscense. It seems like the ones that know how to drive really like the tire though.
