Wasn’t he offered an academic scholarship at Yale? If he is a good enough student to go to Yale, why couldn’t N offer him an academic scholarship as a backup plan? Perhaps it’s not that simple?

I think the “we don’t have room” was a save face excuse perhaps by the staff. We had room and he was N but changed his mind. That’s how I read it.

You don't think schools would abuse the F out of this if it was a legal practice?

I did have a friend who was on a full ride academic scholarship and the fb team.  He was able to do that because he was not recruited at all and walked on to the team after starting school (basically showed up at the football offices freshman year to inquire about getting on a training program to tryout for the team, the told him they needed an extra player at this position, pulled some film on him, had him do a few drills, and he was on the team a week later).
