I've moved the thread to the Junkyard, and I'll reply to Michelle Gullett.

They sux. Limit the amount of times you can read articles on the site. But for a price, you to can read the drivel we produce. :D

I like to think our members produce better Nfo and content then most of their writers.

Stupid copyright laws :D

Wow, it was just a picture? Are we supposed to link to a picture with the headline and just say, "Click on this guys. There's a cartoon there."?

On the other hand, I sort of understand it. They employ this guy to draw these cartoons for them and it's a piece of their intellectual property. They need this stuff to drive their traffic and revenue. Can't help but think their industry is fighting a losing battle here, though.

Which ultimately, would be a little sad for quality of content.

This is why I haven't been posting anything from the OWH or JournalStar lately. While I understand and respect their right to protect their copyright this is just petty.

My reaction? Ban all articles from the World Herald. They want to play hardball? Fine. No more free advertising for them.

I recognize that, with very limited exceptions, most newspapers are dying and that they are hurt both by their distribution model and the prevelance of alternative media outlets. However, this case is a perfect example of how newspapers are becoming dinosaurs. Had OWH been half-way intelligent, what it would have done is thanked us for the proper attribution, which Lance did, and for spreading the cartoon beyond its normal distribution model and exposing a raft of "out-of-staters" to its content and the desirability of obtaining it. Then, they would have asked us to post a notice that OWH is selling framed prints at various sizes - perhaps even autographed by Bo or members of the administration (it would violate NCAA rules for players to sign if the item is for sale as opposed to free). And also donate a percentage - doesn't have to be a large percentage - to brain cancer research or something similar.

This is why newspapers are dying - they don't have the vision to take opportunity of new media. Their loss...
