Our oline needs to improve

Tommy is a good qb, newby and ozigbo are good backs and we have an elite wr Corp. I feel our oline is holding us back from being an elite offense.
Or Tommy's inability to throw outlet passes is allowing them to pressure him every time.
bet Ryker Fyfe could make those throws.
Side note: I do think TA is by far the better overall player
Yeah, but making those throws to get the pressure off you is meant to set you up for what you do well......see where this is going? Are we really comparing Armstrong with Fyfe?
I can compare the two Arm strength- TA>RF

Accuracy- TA<RF

Running ability- TA>RF

YOLO bombs- TA>RF

Not sure if that last one is a negative or positive but I think Fyfe has strengths that can be utilized for a game plan as well. That game plan looks way different than Tommy's but I can assure you those throws can set up plays that Fyfe can execute as well. Good lord everyone acts like Ryker Fyfe is a waterboy we grabbed from the opposing sideline to be our backup.

I want to make it clear I think Armstrong is the better player, but I have some faith that Fyfe does some things better than Armstrong. The sum of his parts is not equal to TA as a whole but some of his parts are a little better than some of TAs and I think those strengths could still be utilized to win games, albeit in a different way.

Whisky did a great job hiding their blitzes. Their LB's were/are incredibly quick and athletic. I saw a few times they brought them up as standup DE's in some situations. Our OL, even healthy, would have their hands full/ I think this will be the best D we see all year.

As mentioned above, they did look a little tired towards the end. Maybe depth is an issue. The only way to get them winded is long, gut check type drives. 3 and outs won't wear them down or help us out. Indiana play calling was a prime example. The OL was giving TA no time which effected the passing game, the run game and the play calling. We need to do quicker pop passes, screens to the RB, misdirection or roll TA out. Give him a chance. Also allow the OL to simply bull rush, and give them time to get in the groove. We can't afford slow developing running plays or Wisky, like the Hoosiers will be all over that.

A healthy OL, think depth, and Westy, Oz and Carter back would pay dividends. Not only in offensive productivity, but play calling. I think we missed Carter more in the run blocking than the passing game. Also need to challenge the receivers this week to really get after the down field blocking. That will be key in making a screen go for yards or get stuffed.

We need to beat Purdue first though....

After re-watching the game, my take is this. First, the injuries (Knevel back gone on the first play. Gates on a sprained ankle most the day, taped and played, and dont discount Tommy's ankle issue and the effect that has on the oline) combined with missing Carter is having and impact. The lack of qb run game saturday I thought hurt the oline. It eliminated the deception from the playcalling and what that does is eliminate the angles and first step advantage from our guys. indiana's def playcalling without having to worry about Carter AND Westerkamp AND Tommy's full run arsenal was very aggressive and disrespectful to the receivers and Tommy's arm/eyes (disrespectful meaning they showed no respect to those things, and played/gambled as such. it's not that I thought it was wrong and am complaining about dirty play or whatever. Cuz i know some will take it that way). Carter I believe has a bigger impact in our run game than the pass game. He's a beast on the edge. I think we went into "just win the game" mode rather early in that one. Not much goin on in the designed qb run game. Even the read game was pretty sparse. i think their was a lot of protection of Tommy. And the impact that has on the rest of the run game. Lots of under center, conventional handoff game saturday. Langs hands were pretty tied most of that game.

Oline needs to get better. But as of right now, i dont think lack of performance is in any way indicative of the job the coaches are doing. Not even through two full years yet and the depth is still being developed.

You know some might call you an apologist.

And the smart ones call me knowledgeable with proper perspective.

O-Line has been terrible for the last 10 years. Always thought our O-Line has been extremely soft. With that said, I think our offensive line has done a great job this year and seems to be improving with each week under these coaches. They seem to come alive in the 4th quarter which is huge.

at least At the very least, they play with a little fire in the belly. Pure intensity and mauling attitude can make for a lot in the technical stuff. Sure you need to be sound in that too to be a great oline. But imagine our struggles if this particular group didnt play with the chip they appear to play with, and took on the perceived softness that some of the recent past groups had.
