Pitt Notebook: Offensive line riddled by injuries
Sunday, September 11, 2005

Paul Zeise, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Pitt may have emerged from its 16-10 overtime loss Friday night to Ohio University with more than a bruised ego and hurt feelings.

The Panthers also lost a number of starters to injury, particularly on the offensive line, and coaches may have to scramble to find replacements before the game Saturday at Nebraska.

Starting guards Dominic Williams and John Simonitis went out with undisclosed injuries in the first half and did not return. Starting right tackle Mike McGlynn went down with an apparent knee injury in the first quarter, but he returned.

Middle linebacker H.B. Blades finished the game despite a leg injury, but he was not at full speed.

Starting defensive tackle Thomas Smith, who just returned from knee surgery, hurt his ankle in the fourth quarter, and receiver Joe DelSardo had a foot injury.

As a result, the Panthers were forced to break the redshirt of true freshman offensive lineman C. J. Davis (West Allegheny) and use backup center Chris Vangas at guard. Vangas had been getting some reps at guard in practice, but his natural position is center.

Earth to receivers

Tyler Palko struggled throwing the football during the Ohio game, but the receivers did not do well, either.

Palko completed 13 passes. Nine were caught by running backs or tight ends, and wide receiver Greg Lee caught the other four.

The rest of the receivers were shut out, including DelSardo, who was Palko's target all three times he threw an interception.

"Obviously that's not what we wanted to do," DelSardo said, when asked why the wide receivers didn't have more receptions. "Sometimes, the game goes a certain way. I think we were close to making some plays, we just didn't get it done. We'll keep working hard, that's what we can do."
With the depth and talent of our front seven I dont see many problems with us shutting them down!

I think with our poor oline we will have trouble scoring aswell. Even with them struggling with oline they still have twice the offense of either team we have played so far.

Our O Line may struggle but at least we will have more protection for Taylor then Palko does.

You do know that Palko loves to throw interceptions right?

Our defense loves to score so it should make for a good time watching Palko fall apart against the Huskers again!

Palko is twice the offense of Chris Barclay? Hah! I'll believe that when he completes a pass to a player on his own team.

I would like to say that this game will be a cakewalk, but without a bunch of scores from NUs D, the first 2 games would have been nailbiters. And we can count on the D scoring a TD or 2 every game.

Pitt is bad, very bad, and Im hoping that NU will have made more progress on O. Pitt may not score, but NU may not score much, either.

As bad as I think billy c and co are, at least we dont have Wanstedt (sp?) for a coach, even if he was puds first choice :dumdum

Just me, or is it time to be the shark smelling the blood in the water. This is our game to start to show who the Nebraska Cornhuskers can be!!! :box :thumbs

Im sorry, but i thought that being the fourth best running team in the country and having a second team all acc runningback returning qualifyed as a good offense. Certainly good enough to put up more than ten against OHIO!!!!

Remember everyone, Wanny was Pud's supposed first chance guy at leading NU to the promise land. He led the Bears straight to hell. He led the Dolphins the same direction. It's nice to see he's leading Pitt on the same path of destruction.

I said it quite a while ago before the season even started we'd beat Pitt. I don't care how many shortcomings our current staff have, they don't even compare to the shortcomings the clown Wanny has!

Yet, I still want to point out that Wanny was supposedly our first choice as coach at NU. It's nice to see the vision of our current AD!

Pitt is NOT in trouble, OK?

1) NU has a confident, attacking defense

2) NU's defense is exactly what takes down a team like Pitt

3) Palko's receivers all seem to be wearing the wrong jerseys

4) Palko cannot be confident in ANYTHING right now

5) Palko's confidence will NOT come back in front of 78,000 in red KNOWING they can and will rattle him

6) NU's offense will not need to do much...but they will this week

7) NU will fix the left offensive line, even if it means putting Tommy Lee in.

8) This is Taylor and Co.'s first day game since...Spring game...see the connection?

9) Everyone but Benard, ignore the top line. Yes Benard, the Huskers are screwed again this week, and the sun won't come up dedhoarse  ;)

Lol, I sure hope that's not the case. Hopefully they can just step it up, and stop making the mental erros, and play tougher. And I agree with the rest of it. This should be a good game to get our offense rolling. Though, if we don't string together 4-5 nice drives against Pitt... our offense might be a wash for the season.

??????????? Did you watch the Ohio game. There offense was smoking that day.

i dunno. that sounds kinda harsh. maybe 'love' is too strong a term.

i don't think he puts on his pads and thinks, "man, when i see one of my recivers in triple coverage, LOOK OUT..! i'm throw right at you, buddy..!" or "i'm gonna turn this ball over soooo many times, the pitt alumni will be thinking i'm cookin' pancakes..!" or "i'm gonna loft this football into the air like i'm a complete and total pansy... with a muscle disorder and dyslexia! YEAH!"

...

... or maybe he does...

meh.
