Portal Transfer Targets

Well whipple my nipples, it shouldn't be too hard to convert those yards to scores next year.

Which suggests the substandard offensive line, unreliable quarterback and questionable play-caller still had the talent to work pretty well for 80 out of 100 yards of football field.

If it's a crime to be optimistic that small changes can make up that difference, I plead guilty.

Yeah, I know we're all tired of hearing how close the team is but they are. Fair to question whether the current staff can get them over that hump, but I'm hopeful. Especially with the new guys.

I think it's pretty much try everyone who could play there, and settle on who fits best. If Teddy's back some people have been floating Corcoran, and then really any of the interior guys could do it. The switch to Center went really well for Farmer a few years ago, and Matt Farniok is on an NFL roster as a Center. Developing guys there is not as hard as we've made it look, I think Austin just never bothered developing a backup because Cam was good and any potential backups were more likely to be needed at G/T.

Personally I like the sounds of Teddy at LT and Corcoran at C, but my guess is Nouili or Hixson. I think Lutovsky, Williams (transfer from Northern Colorado), and the losers of the Tackle battles are probably too big to be Centers and we'll find 2 Guards out of that group. Hixson has already played some Center, and Nouili was a pleasant surprise -for the most part.
I'm thinking the guards might be K.Williams and Lutovsky (strongest guy in room).  Both around 330lbs.  LT Prochazka if healthy (no brainer), and RT Hunter Anthony/Corcoran.  Center possibly Nouili.  I can see Raiola moving Piper (6'3 310) to work out at center with him and Hixson.  Piper wasn't as ready last year as hoped (at guard).  He'll be a RSJR (technically). Should be older, stronger, wiser.  Also, Corcoran looked better on the right side, and last year was his first full season.  Keep him away from the left side, and at RG/RT.

Is there very many 6'6" centers? I worry that he may struggle with leverage because he's so tall and someone could easily get underneath him,

Nick Gates (measured at 6 foot 5 3/8 inches at the combine) started for the NY Giants at center over the past couple years (or at least started at center before he broke his leg).

No one on Earth would say our special teams were great. Why would they?

But to make this the equivalent of your comment, I'd have to say we need to replace all 11 players on the return team.

There is reason for optimism simply because it's hard to imagine special teams getting worse. There's reason for optimism on OL because new players, new coaches and new schemes will likely bring improvement to a team that had a Top 20 offense with situational problems.

Does that make sense, Mr. Crabbypants?

At being s#!tty

Unless Piper drops a set he isn't going to play a significant role.  All the physical gifts in the world but kind of a chump at heart....

If we add another DB to the team I think it’s safe to say that several if not more of our current DBs will transfer. It’s a good coaches job to recruit over current players. There can be no waiting in the que for your right to play.

Omar from UNI would be a solid pick up (Kolarevic might help). Our DB room is all over the place on who is starting outside of Newsome. All other 3 spots are open game.

I still think the best realistic portal option is Ochaun Mathis...we need a pass rusher off the edge. But it sounds like he is leaning Texas.

Not sure how many scholarships are left but hearing a lot of Buzz about Omar coming to NU and same with Nesta Jade Silvera from Miami. Looking at the scholarship distribution chart provided by the OWH we have 90 on scholarship. This still includes Daniel Cerni who I have been told will medically retire. Other names I could see going back to a walk-on status to open up scholarship spots are Trent Hixon, Issac Gifford, Garrett Snodgrass, Wyatt Liewer, along with Jaquez Yant and Damien Jackson (I think those two will probably stay on Scholarship). Others I could see potentially hitting the portal are Eteva Mauga Clements, Mosai Newsome, Alex Conn, One of the 3 Redshirt freshman wideouts, and the 4th string QB. Maybe a RB too.
