I don't think building an elite program is an all of a sudden venture.  It certainly wasn't for Georgia.  There's zero good reason to think it would be for Nebraska.  That's what I would call a ridiculous line of thought.

To me Nebraska is much more comparable to a program like Tennessee.  I think we can go from 3 wins to 7 wins in one year's time like they did.  That's a realistic expectation.

I suspect you would need several years of winning records and building off of those to get back into the national championship picture at NU.  for now, the goal should be winning records, then confernce (west) titles, they BIG titles.   Doubt that will happen in a single season,  probably need 2-3 winning seasons and good recruiting to get a BIG title game/win.

to add to my above comment, 

if you use NIL and the portal in a really good way, it may be possible to short-cut the traditional way of winning the conference title.  We live in a strange new NIL/Portal world so hold onto your hats...  it's going to be an interesting ride from now on.

Wonder what the rules are for a private entity to contact a player during the season or at the end and offer them some serious NIL money to enter the portal and come to "X" school...

After the Supreme Court told the NCAA hands off on players benefiting from NIL it seems to be the wild wild west for college sports in general and football in particular.  What got SMU on the death list is now the way of the football world. There will be an even bigger divide between the haves and the have nots in the next few years. Hopefully there is enough money in the coffers for the Huskers to rent a few O and D linemen. 

 
I love what seems to be a pretty good portal class, but we have already been out recruiting on paper most of the conference teams who have owned us the last couple years.  We have already had the talent, Question is, are the new faces in both the locker room and the coaching staff what we need to change the culture/coaching tendencies/effort/belief, whatever it is that got us to 3-9?

 
We need to come out strong at the start of the season - no lapses or letdowns. Two of my biggest concerns with this team have been 1) the sloppy, undisciplined, penalty-plagued play; and 2) the lack of "fire" coming out of the tunnel. Other teams look like wild animals being released from their cages, or horses chomping at the bit just waiting for the gates to open... we look like we're sedated. It's been particularly troubling in games with early kickoffs. If we can come out crisp and strong and win some games and get some confidence, then the ball will start rolling. If we're not 3-0 when we face the Sooners - a guy who Thompson assuredly has a lot of confidence against - it will be a huge disappointment. Everyone assumes we'll be 3-0, but just remember we assumed the same thing last season and then proceeded to get our butts handed to us by the Illini and their backup QB.

They have tried. Haven’t gotten a ton of traction because any half decent OL is getting a better offer. Everyone wants better day 1 ready OL. 
 

same thing with DL. We wanted some guys but missed out on everyone good.

We do have a few coming in and I don’t think the cabinets are bare. Just needs a feisty Hawaiian attitude 

 
Maybe some of the O line problems are attitude but I tend to think it’s more about technique and play calling and offensive scheme.  We need to add a power run package to our offense.  A better mix of alignment and play design.  Give the opponent a real run formation to force some defensive adjustments. E,g., show run and actually run; show run and pass; show run and run.  Use RBs as the ball carriers more frequently and add a second RB to the play some.  
 

Effectively execute basic draw and screen plays as well.  Run on 3rd and 3 or 4 sometimes.  Go on 4th and 1-2 and run the ball. Help the O line schematically so teams don’t just head for the QB 50% of 2nd and 3rd downs.  Block heavy with extra size on the edges and perimeter.  

And give the QB a few slants and quick routes to attack the LBs and safeties. Send the WRs deep more.  Add a TE and use him to run a lb off the play.   It doesn’t have to be wholesale changes to the entire offense. Just a better run package for a third of the snaps.  
 

Probably many things can be done but defenses must respect our run game.  I don’t feel any opponents fear our runs.
