Posted a thread about New Members

I was wondering when this would crop up. It's happened sooner rather than later, but it's not surprising.

With the influx of new members, many of whom "know" each other from Huskerpedia/Huskermax, there was bound to be a few people with grudges who brought those grudges to HuskerBoard. It started HERE, and there's a report about it up top. I responded to the situation in the thread but since the name-calling was mostly being done by a new member, I didn't hand out any warnings.

As an attempt to head off future disputes, I posted THIS THREAD in Husker Football, and stickied it. Hopefully this heads off some of the disputes before they really get going.

If anyone has any concerns about the wording I used let's discuss and modify here. I wanted to get something up before bringing it in front of the committee here.

Great job. It was bound to happen that there would be "bleed over", and what you did was perfect at trying to nip it in the bud (for some reason typing that caused BRI to flash before my eyes).

Thanks knapp for doing this. With the influx of new members it's important to keep our identity as Huskerboard - and integrate them here, rather than having this place become the new Huskerpedia. It's important to set the tone and you did that. Also, I think it was a good decision to move that Huskerpedia/Huskermax thread and all the bickering that seems to eventually have happened, out of the most visible place and into the BS forum.

We're starting to have quite a bit of push-back from our current members, many of whom are taking a hard line against the newbs from 'pedia. Unfortunately, there's a lot of broad-brush stereotyping going on, and ALL 'pedia members are being painted as problems. We stand to lose any members we've gained by staying mum on this.

I'm trying to keep as much of the angst in the "I have a problem with a poster from another board" thread in the Shed, but there are new posts cropping up from old members all the time, and I can't see them all.

Having said that, the vast majority of warnings I've given out over the last week or two have been to former 'pedia members. Many of these guys are a pain in the a$$. You don't have to look any further than the crew who's set up shop in Politics and Religion to see how horribly dysfunctional that board must have been. I have taken a liberal approach to warnings towards that group in particular. Hopefully that helps keep them calmed down, but for many of them, I don't think we're going to have any choice but to eventually ban. We'll have to see how it goes, and of course take it on a case-by-case basis.

Over the past seven days I've given warnings to:

C Senor

johnnyrodgers20

AustinHuskr

GBRsal

Foppa

Salsa Shark - gave him a 30-day ban for requesting links to illegal feeds of Husker games, and when I told him that he couldn't he said he knew but he got his link so he didn't care.

Buttercup - just a verbal warning to calm down, not an issued warning

MNSker

Malth

junior4949 - just a verbal warning to stop posting rumors about Cody Glenn

PuegotDaddy

Stumpy1 - this was just a request to stop posting the Monkey Balls picture, not a formal warning

redblooded

That's ten actual warnings and three just telling people to calm down. It's been busy. But for the most part I think the boards have been reasonably clean.

I've had to nail a couple as well - the one that comes to mind is Panhandle Husker, I think.

Just keep doing what you're doing. We'll eventually reach an equilibrium. Actually, other than AustinHusker, my (admittely incomplete) impression is that the HP members have comported themselves reasonably well outside the Woodshed - followed the rules for the most part. Is that correct? Are we talking about actual rules violations or is it more just the manner in which they post - I simply don't know.

There's bound to be an adjustment period. AustinHusker - I'm beginning to think we need to treat him like we did formerfan - start telling him to stop derailing thread by ALWAYS changing the subject to a rant against Bo. If the discussion is about, say, Martinez' throwing motion, and suddenly AustinHusker jumps in with another rant about Bo, send him a PM asking him to stay on topic. If it continues, just go the progressive route - warning, warning with suspension, warning with ban. Just pick instances when he's REALLY taking the thread off-topic.
