Potential New Mods

Yoda
As was mentioned in another thread, I put a couple of former Mods back to regular members as they haven't even accessed the board in months.  In looking at the current list, there aren't a lot of names on it.  As @Enhance mentioned, we seem to be handling things fine for now.  But it might not hurt to have some discussion about other possibilities and add one or two if we think we have good candidates.

The last time we went through this, we advertised on the board and took application via PM.  I can't really find who all applied but perhaps we deleted that after we made the selectoins.

Currently the admins are myself and @Saunders plus @BigRedMax and @DaveH (I'm not sure how much DaveH has been around since the board sold).

Current Mods are @BIGREDIOWAN @Enhance @jsneb83 @Thanks_Tom RR and @seaofred92 .  I removed @Huskerzoo and @huskerguy this morning as they haven't been around for months.

Thoughts?  Suggestions?

Thanks Mav! I may update this as I put more thought into it, but a couple of names came to mind based on overall board reputation plus consistency of activity.

- BigRedBuster

- RedDenver

Both seem to be pretty level-headed and they don't have any official warnings throughout multiple years of membership, which is a good sign. They're also active in P&R which would help some of the monitoring there. We would just want to emphasize our perspective about fair opinion sharing and moderation... and not falling into the trap of something being "trolling" just because it's a dissenting opinion.

Thanks Mav. I agree that although things seem to be fairly under control as is (football Saturday’s are always an adventure) it can’t hurt to have a few names warming up in the bullpen (or even added to the roster).

I agree with Enhance- I think fielding interest or applications isn’t ever a bad idea, even knowing we’d have favorites amongst that group. But opening it up for others who may be interested isn’t a bad thing. I do think RedDenver and BigRedBuster are excellent candidates for the role as well.

As someone that spends 90% of my time on the hoops board, ECisGod is great there. I also like Young Grand Island Husker and Caliborn72.

I agree with BRB and RD. I think they're both good candidates, and would put them at the top. I think we do it like last time, and let people send PM's and go from there.

Since it has been a couple of weeks and it's the New Year, any more thoughts on moving forward with this and what the next steps should be?

In addition to requesting people submit their 'application' via PM's, would it be appropriate to for one of us to message BRB and RD and encourage them to formally apply?

I agree about RedDenver, Mav. I don't know if being a mod would change that behavior, but it's certainly a concern I share.

Just for posterity/discussion, there was some chatter in a recent reported post about Guy telling Notre Dame Joe to 'f*** off.'  RedDenver +1'd Guy's post.

I don't think it's overly damning in and of itself, but it supports the concern about his chirpiness in P&R. Everybody knows (or should know) that telling someone to F off is against board guidelines. Supporting that language and then pretending it didn't happen is a bad look. I just happened to come across it organically and reported it myself.

Do we have a "power ranking" of candidates if you will?

BRB seems to be in good shape but after that....

I still stand by ECisGod being a good addition from what I've seen on the hoops boards. But again- I don't typically venture into the other boards around here with much regularity. His posting history is solely from the basketball board which may be duplicative with what I'm already doing.

@seaofred92 I haven't had much interaction with EC (probably because I don't venture into basketball much  ) but seems solid. No warning history.

Don't think we have much of a power ranking (or even much of a formal list) at the moment. In regards to EC, I don't think his posting habits are a knock against him, but I would personally position that any new blood we bring into the fold would be someone who is willing to take a comprehensive approach to moderation and address issues that happen board-wide. And then, if they have a proclivity for a certain sub-forum, that could be a bonus. If EC is open to that thought process then I think he's a worthy consideration.

BRB is at the top of my list for that reason. He contributes board wide, but is also acutely tied into P&R, a sub-forum that occasionally turns into the Wild West. I try to insert a moderator presence from time to time in there but BRB's a lot more active than I am.

I'm in favor of moving forward and gauging candidate interest, unless there are some more candidates or discussions worth proposing.

I don't know if we're in the market or if he would even be interested, but @Toe seems to be pretty handy with code.  He's been able to come up with work-arounds for some of the hiccups we've had.  I just thought I'd throw that out there in reference to the BlueSky/oembed questions in the Board Feedback forum right now.  If anyone around here would be able to figure out how to add that functionality, it would be him.

I don't have any complaints from a technical standpoint. I can definitely see value in having someone like that on staff.

Do you have any impressions about his potential moderation capabilities? He appears to have a clean record and I can't recall him ever being an issue before, but that's just memory. I'd probably have to look more carefully. Regardless of his technical skills, I personally think it would be really nice to have another active moderator and we should probably look at cleansing out some of our existing ones.

I'll be blunt, but I intend no offense - I don't remember the last time BRI or jsneb83 took an active role in leadership issues or handling a warning report, which is what one of the primary functions is of a moderator. seaofred hasn't been online for almost two years. Somebody who is currently active, involved, and in-touch would be a welcome addition to the room IMO.

And I think we should find out from BRI and jsneb83 if they want to still be moderator and handle those duties because I'm looking through the reports and I can't find a single one they've taken the lead on in the last 2-3 years, which is not a good look.

I really don't.  He seems to be fairly active and I don't recall him being an issue anywhere.  I'm not sure he particularly cares for me, but that might be viewed as a good thing.

I don't recall that he ever offered to be a Mod when we've put out calls.  But he seems to pretty interested in the tech side so that might pique his interest.

I don't disagree at all.  BRI just did ban Gage County a couple of weeks ago for supposedly attacking him via PM.  He shows up every now and then but it is *very* infrequent.  And it seems to mostly be stuff he happens to be directly involved in around the board.

I did a Mod purge a couple of years ago for people who weren't active.  When jsneb showed up again he asked to be reinstated so I put him back on but I don't think he's done anything.

I see seaofred hasn't even been on the board in over a year-and-a-half so I would think he could be removed.

Saunders got moved to an Admin but I don't know that he's ever done anything Admin-worthy and really not ever anything Mod-worthy.  Plus he seems to disappear for long stretches.  He does post some content which is nice but not really anything more than that.

I would be find with some additions and subtractions.  But it seems like the last couple of times we haven't had much luck.  I don't know if we want to throw out some ideas and just do some targeted asking or what the best route is.
