Pretty Good Read

Imagine if these teams had only won 7 games the past couple years?

It'd look like this in Lincoln...

We're a loss to UCLA away from that anyway.

This is all I'm going to say regarding this post...

“It challenges us at the safety position because we have to contain the quarterback also,” he said. “We’ve got our eyes on the quarterback as well as having to cover the pass. It challenges us because, if the quarterback breaks the pocket, you have to stay with your guy.” PJ Smith

Nebraska’s safeties, Daimion Stafford and P.J. Smith, have played a large role in squelching the run, according to defensive backs coach Terry Joseph. Those players have been around the line of scrimmage more often than usual because of the mobile quarterbacks Nebraska has faced the past few games. Playing tight to the line can put added pressure on the Husker safeties, according to Smith, but they have learned to how to deal with it.

But you say our safeties are never supposed to help in the run game.... ha.
Let me elaborate. The Safety is always responsible for stopping the run, while being that extra man in the backfield. The DB's on the other hand, are not there to be responsible for stopping the run, like they were last year, UNLESS the play they received from the line is calling for a DB Blitz. A DB's #1 job is to cover their receiver, and if the ball cross the LOS, cut back and make the tackle, if they made it past the first level of defense. That was not the case last year. Our DL was horrid. I don't understand why you believe otherwise. The ONLY person causing ruckus on the DL, was undersized Eric Martin. Someone who should have honestly been playing LB in a 3-4 scheme, or DE in the Big 12. The only games where he was making a name for himself, were against mid level OL's. Small OL, for other wording. Stein had his moments, but our DL was inconstant and couldn't give support to help out our LBs.

Your defense, is only as good as your DL. Our LBs made PLENTY of plays for the level of talent they had, and they played above what they were ever thought of. If we would have had a DECENT DL, that could make the push, rather than only being capable, athletically, of 'containing' the line, it would have allowed for Compton to get in the backfield more. If your logic is true, then why didn't ND's LB's have more sacks? Why didn't they have more TFL than we did? Because they didn't have an incompetent DL.

3 Jobs the Safety is required to do:

1. Make sure the secondary is in their correct positions, and they understand their duties/coverages

2. Establish extra Pass Defense in the back, while being accountable for the run.

3. MAKE TACKLES

Also, we didn't face that many dual threat QB's. Brett Hundly, Cain Colter, Braxton Miller and Dennard Robinson? Two of those didn't play even half the game, and the other two he obviously couldn't stop the run.
