Program Builder?

So let’s start a conversation to analyze the legitimacy that Matt Rhule is a bonafide program builder.

I will start out high level. So Temple was a low level of football. Lesser opponents and lesser coaches.

Baylor was a step up in conference but still not great. Probably the lowest caliber of the power 5 at that time. Maybe 2 quality top notch teams and staffs. OU and Texas.

Carolina obviously the highest level of football and he got fired quickly.

Nebraska. One of the top 2 conferences in college. So can he succeed with his system with a higher level of competition? I fully believed he would until yesterday. I sure was having some doubts once we got into conference play and things were not looking smooth like they did in non-con. But yesterday sure has me wondering. 56-7 vs Indiana with a new coach and a bunch of D2 transfers. GTFO

It's been 3 schools, over 9 years, and he is now 57-52 as a head coach.  Here is some history of schools before he showed up:

2010 Temple: 8-4

2011 Temple: 9-4

2012 Temple: 4-7

So that is 21-15 the 3 years prior to his arrival, then he went 28-23 in his 4 years, very similar. Is that a significant "building" of the program or just more of the same?

2014 Baylor: 11-2

2015 Baylor: 10-3

2016 Baylor: 7-6

That equates to 28-11 over the 3 years leading up, then Rhule went 19-20 at Baylor. Yes there were extenuating circumstances at Baylor with off field issues, but it was a winning program football wise before him.  Not sure that qualifies as program building either.

We all know the Nebraska history prior to his arrival.

Rhule is now 2-21 against ranked teams, and is just slightly over .500 as a college head coach in 9 years. I am not giving up on him turning the corner just yet, but at some point you are what your record says you are.

Looking at the 3 years prior to when he got to those places tells a story I have not seen mentioned by anyone. TBH it kinda reminds me of Frost at UCF. They were a good program. Had a down year or 2 then he took over and was hailed for resurrecting a s#!t program when it really wasn’t s#!t. Smoke and Mirrors narratives

If u really wanna characterize a baylor progrum where 3/4 of the players dipped post scandal as “a good program” then you’ve lost all credibility. That was a tougher rebuild than the Penn st situation because Penn st has the cache and is the major program in that part of the country.  Kids still went there to play to wear the blue and white.

baylor? 3rd fiddle at best in its own state, you could claim not even top 10 destination if you’re a high school player in Texas

In all that he has down right I has seriously doubt his ability because of what he saw in Satterfield. Who wiffed so big on Sim's that I will never trust him again.  And it seems that the only Satt can do is build QB’s that  become head cases.

Here we go with the mid season angst.  Up until this point I was pleased.  We had an OT loss to a good ranked Illinois team. I picked us to lose yesterday to another good ranked team.  But it is how we lost and the issues that plague this program.  The problem is OSU is up next.  Rhule needs to be careful he doesn’t lose a promising season and momentum.  It cannot be understated how important the games after OSU are.  All of those teams we play after OSU in their own right have their own program issues.  I think USC is better than us but I am starting to hear they are done with Lincoln Riley.  Fans get upset.  I think it is unlikely we let coaches go mid season.  But that home UCLA game is a must win.

Rhule needs to move on players that are not going to play our numbers are crazy and we are this bad we are super young team still but if you are not in the two deep by your sophomore year you should be told thank you but no thankyou

Nice to see that finally said.

I'll still support Rhule the rest of the season.  In the off season 3-4 guys are not let go, I'll firmly believe he is not the man to turn NU around.

I'm a run the damn ball guy.  So maybe we need to fully embrace what made NU great to begin with.  To find the future, look to the past.

I'm still ticked off about the a$$ kicking.

And had people looked at UCF, they had one horrific season before Frost became the HC.  We got sold in potential.  Hoping not the same with Rhule, but damn he hired some craptastic coaches.....

You remember when Frost got fired and Busch took over the D?  They looked like a completely different squad in 2-3 weeks.

Im not asking for anyone to get fired, but it’d be nice if they changed a few things up.

Sit in a room and figure something out.  Do something different.
