QB Blaine Gabbert

Tom Dienhart's take in The Sporting News:

A blue-chip QB will make things fun at Nebraska again

May 17, 2007

When I heard that Nebraska had landed a verbal commitment from St. Louis area prospect Blaine Gabbert, considered by many to be the top high school quarterback in the nation, I did two things:

1. Smiled

2. Texted a message to Big Red Big Boss man Bill Callahan and standout Cornhusker defensive coordinator/recruiter Kevin Cosgrove.

They texted back quickly. But, of course, the Husker coaches can't discuss Gabbert, since he can't sign a letter-of-intent until February. But, let's put it this way: I think everyone in Lincoln is happy.

And so am I. This is another sign that Callahan is on course to return Big Red to its rightful place among the college football elite. Winning the Big 12 North last year was a good sign of progress. The next step: Winning the school's first league title since 1999. Yeah, seven seasons have passed since Nebraska won a conference crown. Amazing. I never thought I'd type that.

Scoring commitments from blue-chip passers has been a problem for Callahan, who enters his fourth year in Lincoln. The arrival of Arizona State transfer Sam Keller takes some sting out of previous quarterback snafus, but Keller has just one year of eligibility left.

Enter Gabbert, who will come on board in 2008 -- and all signs point toward him sticking with the decision and winning the job -- sooner rather than later. Why would he change his mind? Callahan, who along with offensive coordinator Shawn Watson has a connection to the Gabbert family, runs an NFL-style offense that is great prep work for playing on Sundays.

Remember, Callahan took the Oakland Raiders to the Super Bowl in the 2002 season. He knows what he's doing. Gabbert knows that.

Things are gonna start getting REALLY fun again in Lincoln. And I can't wait to get there, too.

Im glad he already knows the situation at QB, now just hope he doesnt think he's the one who decides who the best QB is or his mom for that matter

I wonder, is this Ashley Russell part of Rivals "premium content" because if she is........ she.....or they might be geting a new .....uhhh member.

Anyways, all the reasons why we thought he should come to nebraska he seemed to be aware of. The only reason i was wary is our depth at the position, and he has heard how our new guys are doing.... he isn't scared of competition so things seem pretty solid. I am pumped.

ps-ashley russell (insert mouth watering smiley here)

Not to be a Debbie Downer here, but after last years recruiting de-commits...I won't be that high on him until he signs on the dotted line. LOTS of time between now and next year's recruiting season. Let's just hope that BC and CO don't stop looking for a QB due to this committ. Although....We have Lee and Witt so maybe it isn't such a bad thing.

Far be it from me to be Debbie Downer, but even if he commits he could leave after 1 year like that other guy who I won't mention, but his intials were HB. There's no gaurantee he will ever even see the field. He could get injured or get in a bar room brawl and get kicked off tje team. Heck he could get on the field and never live up to potential. Bad things happen every day. :hmmph :hmmph :hmmph

That sort of stuff could happen with any player. We have to keep getting these type of players to commit to the Huskers. If we have to sit back and only think of what bad things could happen, why bother recruting at all. I'll take all the 5,4 star players we can get and worry about it later. This program is only going to get better and bettter, and I hope to hell that Callahan is here for the long haul. :woo :woo :woo

GBR!!!

The good news is the likelyhood that one of the new guys and/or Gabbert will rise to the top. We got enough talent coming up that you would think someone will emerge. Whether it's Gabbert, Lee or Witt, I don't think any of us care which one, as long as it's someone.

i am dissapointed that he didn't get a five star. I heard it was because he hasn't gone to a nike camp yet, I hope that is the case and the next evaluation, they will make him a five star

So just because he hasn't gone to a nike camp he is

not a 5 star. :wtf Who gives a sh#t what star he is

HE IS A DAMN HUSKER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Patients. These are just the beginning star ratings.

Not to take away from his amazing ability on the field....but does anyone know what kind of a student he is? He already seems to be a class act, just by listening to the interviews, but I am one that likes to look at the entire person, not just what they do on a football field (ahem, Lawrence Phillips =\ )
