Question

Hi guys I know I haven't posted in a while but I have a question that maybe one of our resident techies can answer.

I happen to be an avid follower of sport logos and uniforms. Luckily, there's a site that treats my addiction, Chris Creamer's Sports Logo Community. I noticed that they use Invision Power Boards like us, but they have a really cool custom skin (at least I think it's custom). Anyway we could get something like that here? I think the whole place would look INCREDIBLY clean if we get it done right.

Here's a screenshot of their boards:

It can certainly be done - but I think we'd need to actually hire someone who does that kind of work. We can technically make the changes with the tools we have - the problem is knowing what to change, and having some degree of artistic talent to pull it off. The former I can do - the latter? No way.

Most of what's needed is graphics related - icons, etc. The color scheme - if we can agree on what we want, we can pull that off with some trial and error.

Is it in the budget to hire someone to do this stuff? I presume there isn't a LOT of income for this site, but if we could hire someone to do it, it would look really slick.

I know a guy who graduated from UNL and now works in the movies. He did the aging on Brad Pitt in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and was personally complimented by Martin Scorsese for the work he did in Scorsese's last film (not sure what that was off the top of my head). He could either do the work or turn us on to someone who could do it. I could ask him if you want.

That's an ETR question; he controls the purse strings. Literally - he has this frilly pink purse he carries everywhere. Matches his socks.

ETR?

I'm willing to ask around some other boards and seeing if someone'd be willing to do this for free/cheap.

I think the color scheme is fine; maybe the icons could use some jazz (are they the default IPB ones?)

The thing about red is it's tricky to make a color scheme around it - especially the rich scarlet we have in the scarlet and cream. It's much easier to pull off something with paler, darker hues like the navy/slates in the picture, but that's something we don't have a whole lot of choice over. All told, I think the color scheme does a solid job and pulls off a homely feel, so for the overall colors I'd suggest minor tweaks over wholesale changes.

Both. I mean, the site does very well with the bright reds, but Eric just pulls that off like a champ. It just works.

I see everyone is enjoying themselves in this thread!? Let it to Frank.

We do have a full time IT guy that I think can help, but before we even consider doing it a few questions (and statements)...don't take any ot his the wrong way, just food for thought...looking at this a different way. I do love the ideas you are offering. Keep them coming, I will do whatever we think is best.

*Chad (Blackshirt) will listen and discuss with me options and what we can do. If I believe in it, and there is an obvious advantage and benefit, we can do it. Totally serious.

*Before we even consider pulling a full time employee off a current project (that leads toward a much greater revenue generating activity) to assist here, what is the return on the investment (could be numerous)? What is the benefit to a new color scheme?

Let me know, look forward toward your responses.

My opinon is that what draws people depends on how they come to the Board. If they are just searching for a place to post about the Huskers, they may be initially drawn by the "look". But whatever that "look" is, it has to be clean and uncluttered. If it's too busy, folks will feel confused and not bother to read any posts to judge the Board.

If someone's coming because they've heard something specific about the Board (good or bad) most likely they won't really care about the look - again, so long as it's clean and uncluttered.

Finally, it's content and ease of navigation/use that keeps people. Combine those two, and you have a winner.

I guess what I'm saying is that I don't really think that further skinning will do much in general. We could possibly improve the look a little - perhaps customize some of the features of the person doing is is a real pro on this software. But I would think that, in general, a new look won't really draw many folks in.

I like the idea, but if weighed in a cost/benefit analysis, I think the cost will outweigh the benefits.

Agreed. If we can't do this for free (and some inconvenience on the back end when Slacker has to implement it), then let's not do it. The juice has to be worth the squeeze.
