Question

Let's put this another way, if you could change one thing about the board what would it be. Look around at other boards, what do they have that we need - not want, but need. We will spend money, we have some on the side if needed to pay someone. From what I'm told this envision board software is readily used and there are quite a few folks who can work with it.

Tell me what we need.

Where is our biggest area of improvement?

Well, it would appear that casual visitors to huskerboard, who may frequent huskermax might.

Some people out there just might prefer links to media sites over sifting through pages of message boards to find their information on husker football. Myself, I like both mediums. However I find huskermax's interface easier when I am in a hurry.

And as far as supporting the new Max site, we're husker fans, and to some of us, its important to support our own. Especially when it is percieved that a husker fan is being shafted by corporate-business-California.

I've seen that portion posted several times. People want their husker news quickly. Do we need need to set up a simple page with all the news article set up?

To be completely honest I do the same thing. Go look at all the quick news bites on max formerly known as pedia :) and then hit the board runnin'.

Linkies to those articles or our own in the status update portion would be much less annoying and would require no monitoring for buttmunch comments. And I wouldn't even need to look anywhere else for anything ahhhhh nirvana.

ps I have absolutely no idea how to do that, just statin' the obvious. :rollin

I agree. We could just bump the status updates down a bit and put in a "Quick Hits" section of current news. And if someone doesn't want to do the leg work keeping up with news, we could use an RSS feed widget. Ideally each post would have the basic news, citing the source, and then a link to its thread to discuss it.

I've been thinking about this for a long time. What site do we want to copy or have our site resemble. Take 5-10 minutes and post a link to a website we should strongly look at to use as a template.

We would be willing to pay someone a monthly stipend to help keep up the article if necessary

My 2 cents:

I consider Huskerboard a message board and that's it. Maybe these are becoming a thing of the past, but I don't know. I like that the website *is* the board itself compared to other sites that are just a load of things and happen to include a message board you have to navigate to. (Example of something I hope we won't emulate: patsfans.com)

I've never thought of Huskerboard and Huskerpedia/max as competitors. That said, I'm coming from a purely user's perspective, and can see how the administrator/business side would have greater ambitions. My biggest complaint with some websites nowadays is that they try to do everything. You can't comment on a news article without signing up for an account complete with password and mailing lists, blogs, or whatever. So I like that we're a message board and that's it, even from a content perspective. Our members produce good content and the community itself is 'content' being provided, and HB has built up what seems to be a pretty successful base.

I agree with Frank's earlier post about a new look: "Finally, it's content and ease of navigation/use that keeps people. Combine those two, and you have a winner". I'll add that if we try to emulate a site like Huskermax or Tigerboard, keep in mind that it's not just a new look, but a fundamental change in the structure of the website.

Of course that's not to say some of the plus's people have brought up about Huskermax aren't pluses. I think the PackersHome homepage strikes a fairly happy medium, although I still wonder if adopting that kind of approach is worthwhile.

I hope no one construes my statement as meaning to emulate max or any other "news" site. I agree that the message board is our strength and what people love. I just think links or a means of people being able to take a quick look to current news without leaving the board would be beneficial and hopefully not detract from the main focus of providing a great way to discuss all things of a CORNHUSKER nature.

wow , run on sentence :bonez

Another possibility would be to bump the status reports down and have an area that automatically publishes the topics that are hot (i.e. have a certain number of posts). Our members do a great job of digging up some really good articles and news. Lets just utilize the community. For me, a site needs to stay as simple and clean as possible. I also don't think anyone wants to make this a one stop shop. HuskerNation, HuskerT, HuskerVideos, etc. are all separate sites that I would think would stay separate. I think we're just looking for a bit of fine tuning.
