Realistic Coaching Hires with the AD

If we didn't get Frost for whatever reason, I wouldn't mind them going after Brent Venables. I think he at the very least would be Pelini, but with class and personality (I believe his ceiling is much higher than that though). He is young, energetic, has mid-west ties, has coached and played under Bill Snyder, coached under Dabo and Stoops as well. People drooling over Frost playing scout team QB, Venables did that too. I think we would give him a large asst pool, and I believe he would be able to poach a couple of coaches from Clemson.

+1, good post. I would also take Frost over Venables but could see Venables being a great fit for us.

I'd be curious to know what style of offense he'd run and I don't think there's be any real way to know.

Depends on what positions you were recruiting from within in-state?   We may not be a state full of skill position players but there's a lot a tough SOB's that have been getting overlooked.   We can still load up our roster with plenty of quality Nebraska lineman imo. OL, TE, DT, DE and LB's for sure.
I don't see that. Many of the towns are full of old childless people or just withering away. The demographics are not the same.

Disagree. First of all, the cities in Nebraska are bigger, so there's more to choose from, not to mention that you'll see a pretty good athlete here and there in some of these little towns

Do you legitimately think we could win a natty with mostly in state or local talent now?

For the record, if you say yes I won't bash you for it. Actually interested because we have no way of knowing for sure. I don't disagree there is talent in state and around us and we should utilize that as much as we can. But personally I doubt we could recreate what we did in 97 as far as in state talent is concerned. If it did happen I think it would be after years and years of building the program into an incredibly well oiled machine, not unlike TOs journey to that point.
I am stating that it is silly to say there is no in-state talent. I prefer a coach that builds relationships with every in-state football, basketball and track coach, and works hard to see find kids with potential at the next level. Maybe a kid is 6'3" bu 190 lbs. Can this kid play at NU? Maybe he is all conference after 3 years in the NU weight system. All I want is for our staff to put in this effort.

Here's a list of every Nebraska kid who left the state to play. The rest would be on the team. It doesn't appear to be 1997 anymore.

I found 11 kids from 2016 in that list, 6 from 2015, 6 from 2014. If we keep those kids, we are much better. But I also think there are some very good kids that haven't completely developed enough to be highly recruited. That is where a network can help identify kids with potential. Give those kids 3 years in the NU weight room, and some of them will be contributors.

Damn that Les Miles idea right to hell... I don't get the appeal. There's 100 coaches that would do better at Nebraska than Les...

Oh, I agree, I wouldn't want him near the program. I'm surprised he hasn't gotten a job with his pal Saban yet. I'm hoping Riley ends up there too but I doubt it.

I look at that list and I wonder how many of those lineman would Riley would actually recruit nowadays?

Styles have changed and there were many Nebraska kids that fit definite roles we don't see anymore.  Some of these kids that Wyoming, South Dakota State or even Iowa have taken as of late would've fit the Osborne/Solich eras.

I mean this genuinely: Can someone list out the nuances between the offense that Frost helped to coach when he was at Oregon and what Frost does now?

One poster had mentioned in another thread that there was less zone blocking and more lineman pulling when run blocking.

Anything else?

Same offense but more hat on hat focus so they can be more physical. All of the 3 back sets, triple option, play action out of the triple option, bubble screens, seam passes, inside zones, etc, are all the same offense. He doesn't go anywhere near as fast at UCF as he did at Oregon.

Yes, the cities are full of retired farmers and small town business people buying condos and moving into retirement villages. I'm sure a local sportswriter has done the demographics on this and it ain't pretty.

Joel Makovicka - walk-on

Matt Hoskinson - walk-on

Nearly 20% of the starters for a MNC team are Nebraska walk-ons. The talent is there, you just have to find it.

Moos is a Pac 12 Guy roughy???   What makes you think he ain’t keeping the PAC 12 guy Riley?

Eichorst was fired for one reason, the performance of the football team, thus he was fired because of Mike Riley. Why in the hell would the new guy even consider keeping Riley? His hiring had to be predicated on replacing Riley, sooner rather than later. The latest last possible game Riley coaches will be Iowa and it wouldn’t surprise me if we aren’t in an interim HC situation much sooner than that. Riley will not be on a Nebraska sideline after November this year, he’ll be lucky to make it to November.

Has Moos held a press conference yet? I expect him to start with something like

"Hello I am happy to be in Nebraska. I just spoke with Mike Riley, and notified him that he is no longer the Head Football Coach at Nebraska."

I'm not sure if Nebraska would ever hire Bohl but with that said I don't care if he isn't flashy... he is a blue collared hard nosed football coach.  We would definitely be physical and tough for sure.

Talking about Nebraska in-state talent, Bohl  has some very good Nebraska talent on his roster now at Wyoming. Kids that we don't always deem worthy now but probably would've been takes by Osborne and his system.

Wasn't Bohl the architect of the 2001 Debacle in Boulder defense? The game that started the descent. No thanks.

I have the full transcript from Todd's discussion earlier today. That entire discussion is just the best hot take that they can get for viewership. Zero legit thought into any of it....

Todd did NOT say Scott Frost wouldn't go to Nebraska.

ESPN's Todd McShay was on Ryan Russillo's with Will Cain today and the topic of all the P5 job openings the will probably occur this off-season and then McShay discussed what Frost shoukd do and why.Transcript:McShay: "Nebraska is another one (talking about 15 plus possible/probably P5 job openings). Will Cain: "Are there enough hot coaching prospects to fill that kind of vacancy (long list of P5 probable job openings)?"McShay: "Never are."Cain: "Who is #1 this year? Who is the Tom Herman this year?"McShay: "Chip Kelly. He's got to be, right."Russillo: "Right now if you ask any fan base...:"McShay: (interrupts Russillo): "Scott Frost is another big name I think for what he is doing already."Russillo: "At UCF...So Frost is the Nebraska thing people are throwing out there because Nebraska can only hire people....McShay: (interrupts Russillo and while almost gasping says): "I'd rather be at UCF"Russillo: "You would rather be at UCF?"McShay: "I would rather....Russillo: "Oh set the alarms..."Cain: "Oh hot take!"McShay: "There is sooo much talent at UCF, in that area, in that Florida area. Theexpectations are lower. You got a school that is really yearning to be good and to move into a bigger conference. To me, that is a place to build and make it yours. That could become Scott Frost. Scott Frost did this to UCF like Frank Beamer did to Va Tech."Cain: "But its Nebraska..."McShay: "Ok...Where is my talent coming from? Who wants to come here? How do I get players here?"Cain: "Is this a Big 10 vs Big 8 thing?"McShay: "Its hard to recruit there."(Then they talk about Leach)Cain: "If Chip Kelly...then your drop down is Scott Frost and I'm not saying anything about Scott Frost (Russillo notes Frost was on Kelly's staff)...you just named 9 P5 programs a minute ago, Mike Leach will be at a big time program at this rate...there are not just enough names...or Chad Morris at SMU or someone else is gonna make a lot of money...how great would it be to be 35 years old and cash in."McShay: "The Tom Herman's, Scott Frost's. Schools are smart when they take a little bit of a chance on a young guy who connects with the players, can recruit, has the energy, has proven they can get it done offensively but they are not just about a scheme. They're about running the program and recruiting. It's tough...I see these coaches year-round on their phones texting, social media and it never ends."Russillo: "Most of them hate it by the way..."McShay: "Would you like it? You are catering to 17-18 yr olds..."Russillo: (Throws out some funny young hip lingo reference)McShay: "I am 40 and I don't know what that means...."Segment ends.

I found 15 including current players I assume committed to a school. Iowa has a bunch, Ohio and Wyoming have some, K State has one.  I'm not sure if any of them are starter material for the '97 team. Would be interesting to find out.
The point you and Barton are making is a good one....would they be a good fit for the old system and how much could they develop into?

According to Jim Walden, it's down to Frost or Kelly  :dunno

How many so-called experts got our AD hire even remotely close to being right?  No one.  I think because of the strong booster influence, you know that this question was proposed before we hired Moos, Frost has to be the main target.  I think this is a no brainer for all involved.  Chances are less than 10% Frost says no.  Thats my take, just from listening to boosters, grapevines, and other sources on local talk radio.

Wow, McShay is somewhat bitterly negative about us isn't he?  This is what happens when you keep hiring no-bodies to run a tradition rich program and let it go basement bound in quick time.

I agree.  We all debated names that probably were not even considered for the AD.  We will do the same with coaches, but i think we are all more familiar with the names that will be considered.  I have been as open minded about a coach coming here other than Frost, but I really think it is just a matter of time that he comes here, which will not happen until after his bowl game. So until January this will all continue
