Reputation Feature

Vince from Shamwow just posted a thread in the Feedback forum saying he doesn't have the option to edit his posts. I'm wondering if this isn't a problem with the Reputation function, similar to the one that people with negative Reps have mentioned where they can't post new topics.

I brought him up from -5 to +4 and asked him to try again.

Although if the edit feature was never working for him, I think it may be a problem with the browser compatibility. I'm optimistic that it's reputation related though. Is there any way the Admins can look into under the hood and set it so that the reputation feature is cosmetic only?

I think it's just a case of user error. The reputation system is informational only, doesn't control anything. There actually isn't any way to set it to keep people from posting or viewing topics.

I mentioned this in a previous thread, I could set it so you can only add positive marks to a post; turn off the negative side.. Right now I'm going to turn the daily limit from 10 to 5.

This is what I don't like about this feature. I've gotten three negative reps for this post, without one person explaining why. It's being used for anonymous sniping, and frankly I think it's being done by people I've had to caution for behavior:

I had misgivings about that game. I remember how impressive Florida was throughout 2005, but I also remember that they hadn't played the same schedule we had played, and thinking we'd win - but in a close game. I figured we couldn't stop them from scoring but that we could shorten the game with our ball-control ground game.

We watched the game at the home of my wife's work buddy. Both she and her husband were Florida alums. After the first quarter I was not feeling too comfortable, but felt we weren't in any trouble. It was an exciting game.

After the second quarter, we spent most of halftime trying to cheer up our hosts with comments like, "You guys could come back..." and the like. I spent the whole second half holding in my glee. :)

One thing - Tommie gets way too much credit for "The Run." The Gators gave up on that play. That's pretty obvious. Yeah, he fought on and tore out of their grasp, but they were barely giving a half-hearted effort to bring him down. Florida's defense wasn't SO bad, nor was Tommie SO good, that he could break away from seven determined tacklers. It was just a case of a team being mentally and emotionally beaten, and Tommie and the Huskers at their peak.

Read the context of what I wrote, people. I never said Tommie Frazier wasn't good. It's ridiculous to gig my post if you're not reading it correctly. Sheesh.
I don't mind if someone disagrees with me, but what I don't want is to be a target for people with a grudge because I've had to do my job.

Sorry knap I gave you a -1 for that last post just because I didn't know we could do that to the posts in this forum and I was messing around to see what happens. :thumbs Someone please feel free to put it back to 0.

Is there a way to set it up so that if a person gives someone a -1 or +1 they can take it back later? :dunno

Back to Even Steven.

Guys, I think Joe's suggestion of just allowing positive rep points is probably the way to handle this. The only problem with the Reputation is the inappropriate use of negative rep points. Remove that, and we remove the problem.

What say thee?

Oh, and here's a little known fact - we can set it so that no one can give rep points (of any kind) to Mods and Admins.

I think there's value in positive and negative rep points. Of course there's the potential for abuse, but removing that avenue just makes those prone to abuse move to another.

I don't know that excluding Mods/Admins from rep is the way to go. If I'm saying something way off base football-wise, I have no problem getting gigged for it. Hard to say.

What I'm on about lately is that people whom I've had to speak to about board conduct are using rep to "return fire." Immediately after I disciplined a member for swearing on the board, that user visited my profile and my User Rating mysteriously dropped. Within two days of PMing - not even disciplining, but PMing to talk, mind you - a member about board conduct, that member visited my profile several times and mysteriously my rep dropped by two or three points per day.

That's what I don't like - being set up as a target because we're enforcing board rules. Maybe I'm a little vain about rep points, but I'd like to think I say things that make sense, and when I go to the trouble of explaining my "take" on something and I get negative rep for it without explanation, it rubs me the wrong way.

I've never been a huge fan of rep systems on boards. I haven't found a board that fits it and it doesn't turn into what we're talking about. A way to "get back" at folks.

I'd say away with it all together.

I'm coming around to this conclusion. Someone is giving me negative rep points over and over and I'm getting tired of it. Someone recently voted this post negative:

I frankly don't care one whit who our QB is. Lee, Green, Washington, Martinez, Carnes, Kellogg, Spano... just don't care. If they move the ball, score TDs instead of FGs, don't turn the ball over and have the respect of their teammates, that's good enough for me. The name on the jersey is irrelevant.
Seriously? What is disagreeable about that?

Again, I'm not interested in being a target for people simply because I'm doing my job as a Mod.

I hear ya, it seems that the more juvenile members whether old or young use it as retaliation for some perceived slight as a salve to sooth their fragile ego. Just + for me and keep the - out of it. Let them use words to express their displeasure at someone's post. $.02
