Request Ban

I'll guarantee he's some kid. And I'll guarantee he'll try again. Oh well.
Make a note of his most recent IP. Either he knows how to change it or he doesn't. If he doesn't, that'll combined with his posting style, will nail him. If he does, his posting style will do the trick.

The thing about kids is that they have short attention spans. He'll eventually tire of this charade and that'll be that.

That might explain two very recent, very close woodshed password requests I got from Rosh and austind.

hey ive been reading this forum for a couple years but just joined. what info do u need to send me permission to read the woodshed page?
Hey Zoogies,

Longtime Huskerboard fan. Just getting to posting. Need to checkout the Woodshed. I heard it's halarious! Can I get a password?

it's a CO and a NE ip address and I'm not sure these two are related. Probably not, it's just that they came literally within 2 minutes of each other. I have a sneaking suspicion austind might be the "14 year old" cousin though, given the wording.

AR, there's no way to determine age on the internet but would it make sense (in a legal context) to have one of those "I verify that I am at least __ years of age" before granting Woodshed access? Sort of like youtube and their videos that are flagged for mature content. Not that uh...never mind.

We could, but the trouble I see with it is that:

1. Requests - and responses - are done via email and personal messanger. We'd have to retain copies of those (and the PMs would require screen shots) and store them in a central location accessible to all of us.

2. We don't have a way - absent creating a specialized forms page - to automate number 1. By that, I mean we would need to set up a web-based form that was tied to the database (or we could simply slap together an ASP with a small Access database) and direct everyone to use that. The form would contain a verification that would have to be checked by the requestor stating that the person is of legal majority in the jurisdiction in which he or she resides or from which they are making the request, and then store the request in the database. The form would then need to generate some kind of notice to all of us of the request so that it could be approved or denied. ASP probably isn't a good option - the server is running Linux, and Classic ASP doesn't run well on Linux (and an add-on, to boot). I don't know enough PHP to code that - DaveH or slacker might. Eric, any thoughts on your part? Do we have anyone to whom we can make a request for a form like that?

3. Assuming that we did number 2, I think we'd have to change the Woodshed password and require any one who still wants access to submit a new request.

We could just put language in the Woodshed that says something like, "By requesting the password and accessing the Woodshed, I certify that I am 18 years of age or older." Put it outside, on the description, and make it their responsibility to read it.

I'm pretty sure 1995 Huskers is this joker coming back from the dead. Since he's a Comcast user we have trouble banning him permanently because they give random IPs to their members when they get online.

Here's my take on the 1995 Huskers/Corn Power connection:

Three weeks ago yesterday 1995 Huskers was ripping into Mike because Mike was posting how proud he was of his son's play in baseball this year. It got out of line, and 1995 Huskers got a warning. He bitched at me about it via PM, and I explained that we do not tolerate personal attacks. He brushed that off, basically saying we were overreacting.

Yesterday he did it again, cracking on arkiehusker for posting about his son's baseball team, and I originally just changed 1995's status, didn't give him a warning. He bitched at me for changing his status, so I gave him a warning for the personal attack on arkiehusker because clearly he hasn't learned his lesson.

Now he's PMing me again, and telling me he's going to get this whole site shut down because we gave the 'Shed password to a 14-year-old (allegedly his cousin), and he told me it wouldn't do any good to go back and erase it because he had it on video - the same thing Corn Power/Husker Power/etc said he'd done.

1995 Huskers joined two weeks after this episode, and he's a Comcast user. It's possibly coincidence, but there's a commonality between this guy and the guy we had problems with before.

By the way, here's the last few posts in that PM thread:

Hey that isnt an attack...On another note, My cousin just made an account and got to the pornographic part of the forum without a warning that you have to be 18 or over and he is 14...Now that is against the law buddy and is transporting pornographic material to a minor(I'm a former cop)...are you ready to be shut down and i have it on video camera so, don't think deleting it will work. If you want me too I can get this form banned from the internet so, if you want to be an a-hole i will be one too (I said a-hole and this pansy board will crucify me wah wah)
You go right ahead and do that, "former cop." :laughpound
Haha where do you work oh wait you are unemployed nevermind you spend your pathetic life moderating for free...according to your IP you are in Lincoln well ill be there in a month so, if you want to meet up that is welcomed...I want to see you in real life tough guy
Meet up for what?

I'll let you know what his reply is. :)
I'd love to speak with him about harassment charges if he's a "former cop." He's basically threatning you there, real appropriate. :moreinteresting

Good idea. I've done that.

Yep, a kid. I know it's a pain for you, Lance, but picture of bastard sitting in his parents' basement, hammering away at the keyboard, raging at his impotence at being able to "get even".

By the way, I've banned that IP address. I think that will stop him from even being able to access the main page. Let's see if that helps.

Well, his attention span only lasted an hour before he gave up. He'll never hack my password - it's pretty random. But to even try... that's just dumb. :laughpound

I just set up a filter so if anything else comes in with "68.115.121.194" in the text it goes to my trash. No bother.

The one thing that concerns me is if he requested the Woodshed password from me and I sent it to him via email. That'll give him my email and probably my name.

HA, and I was just thinking 'it's too bad Knapp can't filter those emails, they're all from Huskerboard...
