Retro Practices

Nebraska made a significant alteration in the way it practices this spring compared to last, and Barney Cotton said it's gone well.

“It’s been twice as physical this spring, if for no other reason than we always have two team (stations) going,” the Husker offensive line coach said Monday. “So everybody's getting twice as many reps this spring compared to last spring, because we had only one team (station) going.”

In other words, Nebraska now has an offense and defense squaring off simultaneously in separate areas of the field. Former Nebraska coaches Tom Osborne and Frank Solich often had three or even four team stations at practices, meaning few players were watching because nearly everyone was participating. Bill Callahan preferred a one-station system.

Having multiple stations obviously means coaches have more chances to evaluate players, Cotton said.

“You can’t be two places at one time, but you can coach it off the film,” he said.

For Cotton, it means that 10 of his linemen are getting constant repetitions during the course of a practice.

Nebraska had several offensive line injuries last season. Did the Huskers have enough healthy linemen to work two stations then?

“It would’ve been really close," Cotton said.

More reps? Sounds like a great idea to me.

When I saw "retro," I thought maybe they were donning leather helmets!

Be nice to get back to 4 stations like Osborne, but that would be pretty difficult with the control and focus on technique Pelini likes. Plus we would need another 20 walk-ons to fill the numbers.

I don't think our offensive system now is built for that many stations anyway, not unless they upped the amount of coaches you can have in D-1 ball.

I guess im trying see why this would be news.... with as many players regardless of injury we should have enough to run 2 team stations at one time.

So if i understand this right. In the past we had ONE team station. That means we had some 80+ players standing around watching.

Well the whole point of the puff piece is that when Nebraska was kicking a$$ and taking names part of the reason was that the fourth string linemen were well prepared because of the multi-station business. Callahan changed that, and now that another Callahan regime change is toppling, it gets everyone giddy.

The more I hear about the way Callahan ran things at NU, the more surprised I am that we actually won as many games as we did during those 4 years.
