Robert Rands

Robert Rands quit the team today to focus on track. He wants to be an olympic long jumper.

Too bad we'll never get to see what he could do. I think he was too short to be a great corner (5'7''), but he might have been a great special teams player.

I've heard grunbles of this lately. He'll be a great track athlete that's for sure. Interesting choice considering they don't give full track schollie's.

It wouldn't suprise me if some of his jumps in high schooll would have won in Big 12 meets.

Good Luck Robert

I believe I heard he has left the team to concentrate on track and field...any others heard this?
Yup, he want's to compete in the olympics and feels he needs to concentrate on that goal.

I feel a bit akward doing this, but I feel like I must in order to stamp out any potential bitterness concerning Robert Rands decision to leave the football team. I have never had "insider info" before, but I've got a bit in this case so here it is . . .

Robert was asked at the beginning of the football season to make it a goal to eventually put on 20 pounds. (This is common and perfectly fine in the realm of football) However, adding 20 pounds to his frame would make him only an average long jumper. Furthermore, though listed at 5'7, Robert stands at about 5'5 in person. Due to the fact that he did not want to put on the weight, combined with his potential as a track athlete, he made the decision to give up football. I am here to tell you though, that you've only heard the beginning of the Robert Rands story. This young man WILL qualify for the Olympic Team as a long jumper. Mark my words. Moreover, he is a class young man. My best wishes go out to him, and Husker Nation should support his decision.

no big suprise. Was stilly for callahan to go after him in first place. No way you can be a jumper and play fball at nu.

:dumdum Yeah, absolutely no way that can be done. :dumdum

Good luck, Robert. This frees up a scholarship for next year right?

With Rands leaving, it will make 1 scholarship available in 1 of 2 ways.

A) NU can award the scholarship to a player ALREADY on the team and not a recruit from this years recruiting class

B)Hold on to it and give it out next year to a recruit (as long as it does not exceeed the maximum 25 scholies each recruiting period.

My opinion is that the scholarship will go to Spain or Hickman, giving NU a chance to recruit players in this class

I think this is probably a good decision for him. Sure, he could have contributed pretty well on special teams, maybe in some specific packages.. but, it seems that his future will be a bit more bright if he focuses on his biggest talent (track). So best of luck to him! I'll still root for him as a Husker athlete.. (I'm assuming he's staying at NU for track?)

Was he actually ever on a football scholarship?
Yes

And for those wondering how many scholies we have to give out, it's 23 in this class (Spain, Hickman and Slauson will be getting 3, giving NU about 5-6 scholies to work with for the rest of the recruiting class
