We have the whiskey thread figured I would start a catch all for other drinks that people may enjoy!

I'll start this one off with one of my favorite rums of all time! I've been drinking the Blackadder 15 year Diamond Guyana rum distilled in 2003 from the Port Mourant still at Demerrara Distillers Limited in Guyana.

This is one of the most unique stills in the entire world. A double vat wooden pot still that was constructed almost entirely out of native greenheart wood in 1732, nearly 300 years ago!! The rum produced from this still has a distinct and unique flavor profile and has been used in English Navy style blends for centuries.

This particular example of aged Port Mourant is really fantastic. I am not great with tasting notes but at 96 proof, the aromas and flavors that are here really pack a punch. It doesn't burn whatsoever but just the amount of smells and flavors coming off this stuff you'd think it was at least 100 proof. Uniquely funky unlike Jamaican rum but probably just as polarizing. Not the best at describing as I had said but this one smells a bit like an old wooden box filled with nearly rotten berries and tropical fruits with a hint of motor oil drizzled all over them   the taste is kind of like if a really nice highland scotch and the smells I described had a baby. You get the age at first it reminds you of whiskey then it just takes you for a left turn into (delicious) bizarro world. The finish goes on and on, tastes linger for a good minute after swallowing. Amazing rum to say the least!

Do you just sip the rum?

I used to love getting rum but it has been awhile since I had any.
I sip and make cocktails. The one above is definitely a sipper but my go to for cocktails recently (rum and coke) is appleton signature. I make lots of other drinks(I'm a bartender) but that's my easy go to right now

Okay, is Cocktail, staring Tom Cruise, your favorite movie?

Let me ask something, in the bar business, how much more will a hot female bartender make in tips compared to a make bartender or is it not that big of a difference?

Lol it's a good movie but, as most movies are, definitely different than real life. Where I work it doesn't really matter, but I work at a fine dining restaurant so it's a little different than alot of bars. I'd say at your typical dive bar it makes a bigger difference for sure!

I'm not a huge rum buy other than I like a rum and Cuba Libre every once in a while.  I had a customer in Puerto Rico and they got me hooked on them.  The Rum they also got me to love was Don Q.

What I have discovered bartending is there is a style of rum for everyone and most people's experience with rum likely begins and nearly ends with Malibu, Bacardi and Captain Morgan. Not to say that is the case with you but point being there is so many different flavor profiles in rum and you likely just haven't found your jam yet.

I would highly recommend Doorlys XO if you have a Total Wine near you. Less than 25 dollars, no additives and just delicious flavorful rum that you can use in Cuba Libres or drink straight. Also I would recommend Grander 8 year if you liked the Don Q. Similar style of rum.

Also I would highly recommend people try Rhum Agricoles from Martinique! Rhum JM Terroir Volcanique or Clement VSOP both should be pretty findable and affordable and really high quality stuff that I think anyone that likes good whiskey could enjoy. I also really like the unaged Blanc agricoles. Some can be smooth enough to sip!

That's me.  I have mostly just had the normal rums sold in central US in a mixed drink.

Now....the best rum I tasted in PR was the homemade rum from my customer's family. THAT was very good.

Rum brands I love:

Doorlys- only can be found at Total Wine but great rum from Barbados at a great price

Appleton- signature and 12 year are great introductions into Jamaican rum. Very light Jamaican funk

Grander- Spanish style rum with real age statements and no additives.

Smith & Cross- Jamaican funk bomb

El Dorado- great intro to Demerrara rums, one of the oldest and most iconic rum styles

Denizen- affordable, delicious cocktail friendly blends

Rhum JM- affordable and available Agricole. Clement also good.

Do you get a lot of freebies or samples?

@Nebfanatic

I have a rum question. Back in 1996ish I brought back a couple different bottles of rum from Venezuela. Drank one fairly soon thereafter but I still have the other one unopened. Is it still any good?
