rumors and coaches threads

I want to disguss what to do with these. Before we make a decision we need to convene.

My opinion: I say let them all role. This is a message board...we are not OWH nor the Lincoln Journal, nor a paid recruiting site. People come here not just to be informed but to be amused and find out the latest....Rumors provide both. Whether there members or nopt, there "hits" and "unique user" is recorded. The more we have the more advertising we make.

I want to disguss closing these threads and merging them.

My opinion is to lessen this and do only when absolutely necessary. We want people to click around and look and open all the threads. A thread that is merged too many times, gets very, very unorganized and difficult to read.

Discuss..........

I have a slightly different take. If you don't merge them, threads drop off the front page and are rarely viewed thereafter. They become lost, and no posts are made to them. If you merge them, you at least keep the "hot" topics on the first page, and increase the chances that you will get more postings because people will actually see and read those threads.

Too many threads and folks will just hit those that have a title that intrigues them. We lose "hits".

Counter-point. If we let the posts multiply, perhaps eventually folks will get tired of seeing their profound thoughts and opinions not getting a response, and they will eventually start trying to see if there are threads out there that already match their topics.

I don't hold out much hope for that, but it's possible.

A possibility. Right now, we're set for 50 per page. The only question is how many? I would hate to double it - I think that would make it less likely that folks would scroll to see them all. Seventy-five might work.

I'm for whatever is decided by the masses. I just get tired of 743 different topics started about the samething. People are lazy and don't think anyone will read their opinion unless they start a fresh thread. Examples would be all the Pelini threads and the "Where is IBR or IBR any Info" crap.

And I'm spent.

We could let the thread hang around til it starts to get played out then merge it. Would still get the hits and control the clutter when the thread has lost its luster so to speak.

Of course that takes monitoring.

How about instead of merging, we simple close it. Merging to many mixes everything up. When merging it goes according time and date the post was made, it will not organize it according to thread.

That's doable.......

I have been thinking about this for a few days. I look at it this way.

Yea, all the rumors and the bullsh#t probably get us more hits NOW. But once this all dies down, growth will slow to previous rates. If anything it's not real growth. It's fat. I think allowing them for the benefits of additional hits isn't worth it.

Also, in my opinion we can't have this board become overrun with retards. Free boards are already looked upon as garbage by the poster's that we'd probably like to have come around. Hell, skersfan even commented in a thread the other day that it's harder and harder to come around anymore. I don't want this board to become a bunch of elitist a$$hole$, but I don't want it to become waterhead central either. Like I said before when crap like this shows up our traffic grows A LOT, but it isn't real growth. I'd say that less than 10 percent of folks that sign up in this period will actually be posting 6 months to a year from now.

That being said, I say that any rumor thread that is started is moved to the BS forum, leaving a link. Let them die there. We could pin a topic explaining the action.

But skersfan will always come back, as will many. "Any print is good print"......Lindsay Lohan gets drunk driving arrest.< sh**ty pub but she will sell more. Plus when she recovers, it's a feel good story.<<more pub

People are addicted to this stuff. They will always return. We have gotten numerous pm, emails whatever about people wanting to cut their membership. I don't and then two weeks later they start poking around and posting again.

All free message boards are being run over with idiots. There is no place to hide. People are amused and also are serious about getting the latest so called news the quickest....why not us.

The people lose more credibility not the board nearly as much. Because the people who were here before the sh#t storm know what it was about. We are a free open forum for people to run their mouth..

Many of us mods that were here before...four, five years ago know how difficult it was to get this started and we were scratching for members. Now we are trying to turn them away. Nah...I don't like that.

How about a separate forum for rumors....any decent rumor. even half assed rumor. Call it "rumorville".

The rumor mill will be over once or if a new coach is named so it would be short lived. As for the influx of newbies who might not stick around, there is nothing that can be done about that as a free message board as ETR pointed out. We have to try to limit the clutter and streamline the issue without taking away the advertising appeal IMO.

Just a suggestion, how about adding a sub-category or two to the husker football forum for topic specific threads; rumors-me-this, fire this coach or that, ban the tunnel walk, the school colors are changing… That way we can move them and the people that want to read them can and those that don't aren't bothered by the clutter?
