Rumorville

Truthfully, I almost never went into Rumorville so I don't know if it was regularly used or not. My perception is that it was used few and far between and perhaps really gained some steam during the last coaching hire. But, that's over now.

I'm good with experimenting with this. One member posted a status update asking where it went and I gave a quick explanation saying we're open to feedback on it.

Heads up, Enhance. I edited your post in the status update about the Rumorville to remove the mention of the mod forum. I don't know that we want its existence to be public knowledge. Thoughts?

No worries! I thought the private mod forum was public knowledge since I thought I had seen mods mention it in years past before I became one, but I'm cool with whatever.  :cheers

In relation to @knapplc's petition thread to bring this back in the main football forum...

My two cents: I don't see a need to bring this forum back for the same reasons @Mavric outlined in 2018 when we removed it. I almost never personally used it and I think it opens the door for a lot of stuff that generally isn't very important.

I'm good with just notating "rumor" threads and leaving it at that, particularly for the sake of keeping all football discussions in one place as opposed to breaking them out separately.

I still tend to think it's not really that necessary.

However, a lot of the previous reasoning was based on the former owner's desire to direct as much traffic to the main forum as possible.  I haven't heard that from BigRedMax.

I guess if that many people really want it, it's probably not that big of a deal to bring it back.  My guess is there are way more people posting in the petition thread than will actually post in the Rumorville most of the time.

But if that's what they think they want.....   :dunno

What if we require that they need 10% of registered board members (much like state petition laws) in order to get it pushed through. That would be 1,208 signatures and (probably) wouldn't happen.

Ultimately, I think you're spot on that most people will not actively post in it. It'll be a novelty and then wear off. Any rumor worth discussing will probably be more valuable in the main forum as opposed to some side forum. Message boards are inherently about speculation and rumor-mongering (to a degree) anyways.

As a side note: one problem I have with Rumorville is the connotation that this is the place to go spread rumors. I feel like the football forum comes with some measure of culpability and responsibility i.e. only stuff that's genuinely worth discussing will end up there and stay there (i.e. a player getting kicked off the team).

This is a good point.

There is a Report of the "Mass Exodus" thread that it belongs in the Rumorville.

Probably right, just not sure if it's worth having or not.  I don't really care either way.

What say we?

I added the rumor label to the thread title for now, especially since not much has really come of it yet.

My thoughts on Rumorville still haven't changed overall. I think it can serve a purpose during times of turmoil (i.e. a coaching search) but I'm otherwise cold to it.

OK.  I've bowed to the peer pressure and changed my mind.

People keep asking for it.  And it seems like a good place to dump rumors of players/coaches heading this way or heading out.

We've had a couple people ask about bringing this back, including one thread in the Board Feedback forum. I said I'd open up a dialogue with other mods/admins just to test the waters, but I think it'd be good to have a clear consensus and for all of us to be on the same page.

IMO, I'm not a huge fan of Rumorville, and there isn't any indication from the university that Frost is going to be fired any time soon (unless I missed something). I think Rumorville tends to be a breeding ground for a lot of nonsense and rumors that we don't necessarily want the board to be associated with (like Frost's alleged family/personal issues right now). Also, people have a tendency to post the same things in Rumorville over in the main football forum... which makes it a bit redundant and adds to our moderation work load.

I don't mind tagging threads as "Rumors" in the main football forum so that all conversation gets funneled there (i.e. if a coaching search happens). A lot of the stuff people want to talk about could go in a small number of threads. That's just my two cents; naturally, open to other opinions.

I like the idea of tagging the thread as a rumor instead of opening up Rumorville again. You're right, we don't want to be associated with some of that stuff as a board.
