Santos, Cooper to split time

With Anderson out from a torn ACL injury, it looks like Santos will get his opportunity. I was suprised that Cooper being a safety will be splitting time with him. I guess it just shows the lack of depth at that position. Whaley appears to have lost his starting position indefinitely. I feel bad for him, but his fundamentals have been horrible.

The good thing about this move is that we should have some speed and athleticism at this position if not much experience. This game is ideal for them to get some significant playing time before Wisconsin comes calling next week. I look forward to watching them. It will add some excitement in a game where we should roll.

I don't understand why Cooper isn't in the nickel role. He has the similar build to Hagg, and seems to have the necessary athleticism. Ciante Evans is doing a nice job at the nickel, but he seems undersized for the position....

Cooper doesn't have the cover skills Evans has.

That is only half of the skills needed for the nickel position. It is also necessary to be able to be effective on stopping the run, and I think Cooper could really help us there. Like I said, for his size, Evans has done a good job at the position (especially that tackle in the open last week). Will Evans be able to stay in the game against teams like Michigan St., Wisky, or Iowa?

Actually Whaley asked if one of the younger guys were ready to play the spread teams because he felt that it wasnt the best part of his game. A real team player. Whaley will be back when we run more base against the Big 10 and he will do a good job once hes does.

Cooper is still the Dime back, were just looking to get more speed on the field.

I think it will ultimately come down to him having to step up, Fisher will not be beneficial on this defense. Even if they are going to pound the rock.

You must have read the paper this morning. Well see what they do, i bet he stays on the field until he proves that he cant handle the downhill runners, then they might put in cooper since he has a little more size. On obvious passing downs im sure its going to be Evans, and for sure when they have 3 or more recievers on the field.

So, we have one player that is better at coverage and one who is better at stopping the run.

We have been playing teams that have spread offenses, the one that covers better is in higher demand.

Whats a "paper"? :sarcasm ..... It will be interesting to see what the coaches do against the run. Evans has made some notable tackles in his career. The one last week, and the one on the goal-line against Missouri a couple years ago are the ones that stand out.

Well, yes....but when a team throws an extra DB out on the field in place of a linebacker, it's because they are gearing up to stop the pass. The nickel guy is the slot corner. You need exceptional change-of-direction ability and I don't think Cooper has the hips for it.

If we find another capable outside corner (Seisay, maybe?) I wonder if we won't see Josh Mitchell move to the slot.

Els on Whaley: "After that UCLA game, he came to me and said, 'Coach, that's not my style of game.' Is one of the younger guys ready to go?"

Steven M. Sipple@HuskerExtraSip

Els told Whaley a year ago he loved him as a person but couldn't stand what he was doing as a player. Whaley has since done a 180.

The #Huskers secondary has made big strides from a year ago, Els said. As for the front seven? It lacks dynamic athleticism, he said.

Steven M. Sipple@HuskerExtraSip

True frosh LB Thomas Brown very likely would have played this season if not for a high-ankle sprain, Els said. "He can flat out run."

The youth movement is not ideal because it makes you worry about our older guys.. but if we're going to do it, do it against teams like Idaho State.

I agree with a previous poster that Cooper strikes me as a safety/linebacker hyrbid role... He cant handle speed of WR's but I would rather have him out there than Waley or Fisher.

Whaley will be back when we run more base against the Big 10 and he will do a good job once hes does.
Which is who, though? Penn State? Iowa? Maybe Michigan State? The teams we don't have much concern over, exactly because they're big and slow. We can probably beat them with any personnel at LB.

Ohio State and Michigan will be the toughest for our defense - because they're considerably faster than us. Whaley, Compton, & Fisher have no place on the field for any given amount of playing time against those teams. With that said, this is great news about Cooper.
