Sargon - validation email not sent?

We seem to have an ongoing problem with these validation emails. Lots of people complain about this. It happened to me when I made that dummy account for Carson Kressly.

Anyway, the latest person to cry for help is Sargon. Can one of the friendly Admins send him a new email? Or, if none of the friendly Admins are available, can Frank do it? :D

Not necessarily true about the emails, by the way but I dunno. It could be something on their end with the filtering. But if it doesn't work for the user, why would it work when an admin resends the validation email?

It is possible to just have admins validate for them. Do we want to do that? What if their email just isn't real?

Is there any harm in dropping the validation step altogether? I feel like it would increase membership, because sometimes members jus don't bother. I just don't know what the downsides/risks would be.

a-hole!

I've validated the account; Lance, would you please let him know?

It seems to be hit-or-miss on the validation email. Certainly, a lot of folks get it and click the link; we rarely have to validate for someone. But there are a few. Seems to be mostly cases in which the ISP blocks the email, although I don't know why. I say that because I've had folks SWEAR they didn't get the validation email and that it never showed up in their Junk mail folder. Some ISPs block some emails before it ever hits the users' accounts.

The reason we continue to use validation is as a spam prevention method. A lot of bot registrations never complete because there's no actual human checking the email account used for the registration and validating the account.

I can't even remember the email I used for the Carson account, but I do know I sent and sent and sent that validation email. It wasn't getting lost in any filters because it was a throw-away account that I had just opened, with no other mail in any folders and no filters. In fact, I tried to register that account two times, and the second time I just posted in here for help because I never got that validation email.

A LOOOOOONG time ago I was a member of a forum that forced you to register using a "real" email, like my road-runner account, and wouldn't allow emails from free places like yahoo, hotmail or gmail. Is it possible that IP Board has built-in filters for these kinds of email accounts?

And I agree that we still need to use the validation process. Otherwise the robots would take over.

I'll let Sargon know, Frank. Thanks!

We can filter by email domains, such as gmail, Yahoo! and hotmail, but we've not enabled it. But all that does is pop up a message that the registration is invalid due to the email domain. No filter is set up through the Board, but it's possible it could be on the server. I don't think so, simply because we've had this issue on both this server and the one before it (and possibly even the one before that).

So, in a case like this, if they ask, you will just switch them over to activated member? That sounds reasonable. It seems a good demonstration of their human-ness, whether or not their email works.

Every time I see this thread title I picture some Space Overlord. "Sargon" should be the name of a guy bent on taking over the universe. I picture Megamind but with a darker cloak.
