The hell that I’m talking about is this attitude that he is the only option, our only hope. Yes the potential is there. Yes he is more realistic than my first choice, Shaw. Yes his resume is impressive. Yes I realize he is likely who we’ll end up with. I wouldn’t say he is the best option but rather is a very good option. Most of my problem stems from the attitude and approach of a handful of posters hereabouts. I will say that the more I watch UCF, the warmer I get to the idea.

The problem I have is maybe more my preconceived notions of what his offense is, maybe more so than what it actually is. I haven’t watched enough of his games to determine if it is in fact significantly different than Oregon was or if he employs enough power and rushing for my tastes. It’s simply my opinion and my preferences. Sorry if I’m not succumbing to the group think here. I need to arrive at my own conclusions. I’m not there...yet.

You are mostly correct. The vertical passing game does concern me. As you say, I’m “old”, old enough to have watched Nebraska football since the very early 70’s. We have never been very good at the vertical passing game and it has never been a significant part of our offense when we were any good. It has been a big part of our offense when we’ve sucked for the last 20 years. So yeah, it concerns me. Call me old fashioned, I prefer having a run first identity. I prefer being the team that knows what to do and how to get that first down on 3rd and 3. I’m not opposed to having a viable passing game or a balanced offense. I would prefer it. I just have never seen a successful Nebraska offense predicated on throwing the ball in Memorial stadium in my 54 years on this earth.

And Im a little pickier about what I consider “good” football than Landlord is. He has been content and satisfied most of the 2000’s. I haven’t been impressed at all, by anything, since about 2001. My only hope is that we get back to controlling the LOS (which we need to do to have success in the B1G) and that we get back to an aggressive, attacking form of defense (which I believe we need to ever win anything of substance). It wouldn’t hurt for some here to listen a little bit to a guy who has been watching the Huskers since before some of you were following your moms around the grocery store wearing three cornered britches. (I had to add that just because you called me old) :P

Great post! I think our offense can be more like Alabama's. I prefer a smash mouth offense that is predicated on the run, too but has playmakers at wide receiver and can score in a heartbeat. They have a dual threat QB which I think is another plus. I do think with the right coach, we can lineup in an I-Formation like we used to and run the ball better and still have a downfield vertical passing threat. We have to have that because the game has changed quite a lot.

I'm only in my 30's but I've researched Cornhusker football history. So, I'm well aware of what we were like in the 70's and 80's and especially the 90's since that is when I really grew fond of Nebraska football. I know Tom Osborne loved to throw the ball a lot at first. He was a perfect coach that could adapt and change. Even on defense.

I recall an interview before the 1995 OB vs. Miami where he said something about our climate not being favorable for an offense that likes to throw the ball a lot. This is true and to this day, it still holds true and we have nearly 20 years documented of it not being so successful. I just think the days of running for 300 yards every game, every week and passing for 120-150 are over.

Today's defenses and game present different challenges as opposed to the 90's. It's more about finesse and speed than it is strength and power. I like coaches that can put all that together and present a balanced approach while still maintaining a level of physicality on both offense and defense.

We lost our mystique over the years of being the most physical football team in the country. Teams hurt after they played us. With the right coach and staff, we can bring it back. I think toughness and physicality is something you can teach rather quickly if it comes from a coach that preaches it.

Moos understands the need to run the ball in this conference. I just cant see him even entertaining ML to Nebraska.

This is the same conference that has Urban Meyer, and once had Drew Brees. For all the continual talk about running the ball in the BIG TEN, it's not exactly good at it. Only Ohio St, and it's not exactly two tights pound you in the face offense, is in the top 20 in ypc this year. Wisconsin makes for only the second in the top 30, and Michigan makes for only 3 in the top 40. Last year only had 1 team in the Top 46, Ohio St.

Meanwhile, every year this conference has about a half dozen offenses ranked 100 or below in one or more major offensive categories.

You can have all that and still suck because the coaches and players don't know what they're doing.

If he weren't an alum and former player then I think you would have a stronger case. But, given he is all of those things and a Nebraska native, his accomplishments are newsworthy. Granted, the line is blurred now that a large portion of the fan base wants him here as the next coach, but there's no easy way to walk that line.

I don't have a problem with any of their responses they've given about Scott, personally. They've never organically brought him up and they (mostly) give generic, deflective answers about the work he's done.
Thats a fair assessment. If I remember correctly, you are one of the posters who has a source that they are negotiating with Frost right now? Or am I mis spoken? Given that perhaps they are negotiating with him it just makes me think they comment in more detail for a good reason perhaps. But I do respect your analysis above.

Interesting.  Can't help but think this is what's going on.  I see no real reason to keep Riley other than he is a nice guy, and the players respect him (I assume).  Those Reasons don't win games and don't make money.

The only real reason to keep Riley would be if the top 2 or 3 candidates truly aren't interested. If we can't snag one of the best 3 available coaches, then we'd be better served to wait until next season's carousel.

Even with as poorly as we've played this year, with as tough as next year's schedule is, I can't imagine anyone stepping in and changing systems and doing any better in year 1 than what Riley would in year 4. Not even Frost, who seems to be the top choice.... So unless we're sure that we have a long term solution, it'd be smarter to wait another season than to make a knee jerk replacement like we did the last time.

Stick to the subject of the thread. It is not hard to do.

Onlygators.com is saying they have confirmed with sources about Nebraska wanting to interview and eventually hire Scott Frost.

How the f#*k is talking about Jeff Long relevant to Scott Frost? Can’t wait to see the hoop you have to jump through to connect the dots.

I mentioned about having the right coach and staff in place. Do you read posts entirely or just nitpick at a few sentences? You end up taking things out of context, usually  :)

With TN getting their but kicked all around the place against Missouri, that job is going to likely open up now based on what that Knoxville media guy was saying last week (needed to make a bowl game). If they lose to LSU on Saturday it will be 6 losses in their last 7 games (ouch!!!). And that is for a guy that was already on the hot seat.

I hope TN makes a good hire, but it isn't going to be Scott Frost.

UCF's QB commit is going to be flipping to Michigan Sate. So Frost will need to bring someone else to be the dual QB when he becomes the next coach. There is a good one in KS he should try to flip away from North Carolina.

Also a great post  :thumbs

Good response to Hayseed also. I didn’t say I’m opposed to having a vertical passing game. I just said we have struggled with it almost always, seemingly forever, so it concerns me. Of course with the right coach, personnel, attitude and culture anything is possible.

Maybe a chance to flip his former commit from MSU if he likes Frost but just wanted a big time school, if he comes here.  ;)

Yes, I did, but I summed it up in one sentence. We should hire one of those coaches that do those obvious things. Seems the Peter Principle has taken over college football.
I'm starting to doubt that we will hire one, instead we'll all give advice on what basic plays to run and whether we like to run or pass.....wondering why $3 million coaches don't seem to already know that.
I watched UCF/Navy and told my son how odd it felt watching coaches call things the way they should.

This post is awesome too!

Gators are apparently still looking at Frost.

Hey.... Maybe do us a favor, and just give us a "jessica0" megapost of the day, instead of flooding the pages with every single random tweet you find?

Florida insider is saying tonight that he is hearing that Tom Osborne will be offering the job to Scott Frost. I doubt that is an official offer where ink goes to paper, but could be a gentlemen agreement type of thing.

The red shirts would be disrespectful to UCF, IMO.  I think Nebraskans are better than this.  We're not Miami.  Black shirts would probably be okay.
I would think UCF would appreciate the additional fan support whether they are wearing red or black as long as the opposing team isn't red. I don't believe UCF generally sells out. 10000 fans can make a lot of noise and could be the difference in a game. A lot of people wear their school colors to CFB games that their schools aren't playing in and there would be no doubt which team Nebraska fans would be cheering for. Go Big Red or Husker Power chants would be disrespectful.

Iowa Western's starting QB will be going back to FBS next year.  He was recruited by Frost at Oregon but went to Texas before transferring to Iowa Western.  He currently said he is headed to Marshall next year.
