Serious question/observation/problem

Okay so yesterday this kid at my school got beat up after track practice (6 pm). I am not in track and wasn't there but know a few kids that saw it happen. So some of this might not be true (u know how high school is) and they were minors so it wont be in the news.

Anyways these six kids from another school came looking for one kid (for talking to one of their girlfriends nonetheless), they got a punch in on him but then a kid who was leaving in his car stopped the car and told them to leave. So the six kids went after him and the kid they were original after ran away. And they start whaling on the kid with a tire iron, wrenches, a crow bar, their fists and supposedly had knifes with them but didnt use them. And at one point were trying to run him over with a truck. The kid ended up getting to the stitches but was school in school today and was fine. The kids or at least one of them turned one of themselves in and supposedly being charged with attempted murder.

All while this was happening I personally know 3 kids that saw it happen and did nothing, and I am sure there was others. The cops were called and everything but no one stepped in. Granted they probably wouldnt help that much but you never know.

My question is: wouldn't you expect people to help out (and I dont want any teenager crap, I know some are d bags, most are not). I think I would have tried to do something, but I dont know because I wasnt there. But isnt it concerning that no one did help? it is to me.

You young man have asked a question that ten or so years ago may have had a different answer. Two things come to mind.

One is that people by nature are adverse to confrontation so they may shy away from coming to someones aid.

Two is that the legal system is a scary thing when you get involved in a situation like that. Many things can go wrong and become a huge problem.

I know that if it were my son I would really hope someone would help. Just not sure someone would.

I'm going to be perfectly honest with you here. If I was in the situation where I was being attacked, I would not expect bystanders to physically get involved unless they were very close friends of mine. Now, if the situation is reversed and I see this happening, I don't think I would have gotten directly involved. Why? I'm seeing what they are doing to this kid, now what are they going to do to me for getting involved? That's just my two cents on that. I've never been in a situation like that and if I was, maybe I would react differently.

I understand where you're coming from, but if you were one of these people who witnessed it and saw them go after a person who was trying to help in the first place, would you try to help? I know you said that you knew of at least 3 people who witnessed it, but those are some pretty harsh weapons that the 6 others had, and they had already gone after someone who tried to interfere with their original intentions.

It's a really tough situation, and also I agree with the point brought about above about the whack legal system that we have. But I honestly think the best way to deal with a situation like this is to call the police & otherwise stay out of it. It may not be the most 'sexy' thing to do, but with the way things are today, you could have punched one of the 6 attackers in the face and they probably could have had you arrested for assault.

Sorry I can't help more than that. I just know that if I were standing there and saw 6 guys wielding weapons beating the hell out of someone who tried to help, I'm not sure I would have stepped in to get my tail whipped either.

Getting involved may have made the situation worse IMO. I mean there is a small possibility they could've been charged with something like failure to render aide, but I highly doubt it since that usually only applies in accidents. In Iowa anyways regular citizens aren't required to get involved in any incident, but only required to stop in case of an accident. The best thing to do in this situation is be a good witness, but I can't tell you that I may not have gotten involved. As a peace officer though I'm required to get involved in any situation where there is a possibility of someone's life being in danger. That's the difference thought between me and a regular citizen. I can understand your frustrations though.................
