I'm not saying a good 40 time makes a good player and a bad 40 times makes a bad player. But 40 times help evaluate a player's ability and how it will translate on the field.

Again, I'm sure all you are really brilliant and the people who run NFL teams are the ones that are wrong. I can't argue with incompetent, uneducated, and uninformed.

I was under the impression that the only ability a 40 yd dash time helps you evaluate is a persons ability to run 40 yards in a certain amount of time. And I'm not sure how running a 4.4 40 translates onto the field. Most patterns aren't 40 yard patterns and most QBs are lucky to have a 3 second pocket. Please elaborate as I am incompetent, uneducated and uninformed.

Nobody ever said you were wrong or that NFL scouts were wrong either. We are all simply stating there are other areas in which he excels that are much more telling of his capabilities. No reason to get defensive.

Yep. The Oakland Raiders have dominated by basically drafting the fastest guy available for the past 10 years or so. They've got it figured out.

Case in point,, one of the slowest wr in my limited memory dating back to 1962 was Fred Biletnikoff.. I think he did ok in college and the pros..and wasn't nearly as big as Jariah...Welcome aboard Jariah..GBR

Well, I have never seen a WR run a 5.0 40, so the 40 time shows some threshold of a player's ability. If Chris Johnson runs a 4.6 instead of a 4.24, he doesn't get drafted and certainly doesn't run for 2000 yards in an NFL season. No, a 40 times doesn't matter by itself, but it shows a player's potential capabilities and how that can translate on to the football field. So who gives a crap about 40 times? Every NFL coach, scout, GM, owners, people who evaluate players for a living - exactly what we are doing here, evaluating a player.

Thats comparing apples to oranges. I do believe a 40 time is more important when evaluating a RB(Chris Johnson) who can touch it 25 times a game versus a WR that may be lucky to touch it 6-10 times a game. I prefer if the WR has good hands, has good balls skills when its up in the air, routes, coming out of their breaks, and so on. The 40 yard speed is the least of my worries, and personally I think its overrated! Besides I think he has developed a little later than most and with a year or two in the S&C program that 40 time will come down anyway...

 
So here is what I like about what the coaching staff is doing with the WR position, they really have it narrowed down to the kind of players they want at each WR spot and are recruiting them specifically and not just as a WR, they want a speed guy on the outside (KB) they want a big body guy that will go and fight for the ball (QE) and they want a smaller shifty quick guy for the the slot (JT)

This guy fits that mold as the big body that will go fight for the ball, I think for that specific WR spot speed is really overrated! Now that being said, his explosiveness off the line needs to dramatically improve, which adding 15 lbs to his lower body will help with.

The film got me excited because he really catches the ball well, especially going up and getting the ball at its highest point, and I also didn't see one ball get into his chest, every ball he caught with his hands. What is the more important trait THIS WR spot 40 time or actually catching and fighting for the ball?

They also look at production. You can run a 3.8 40 for all I care but if it doesn't translate to catches and yards then you're useless. This kid has proven he can produce against top flight high school talent. Not much more you can ask for from a HS kid.

Exactly. Didn't we have a guy on our team a few yrs ago (Mendoza or something) that ran a 4.37 and had a 41 vert DURING PRO DAY. He barely played here and didn't even get drafted or free agent.

You watched one damn highlight reel and looked at metrics from a "camp". I think the coaches who offered know a little somethng about talent evaluation.

My theory is that he'll put on 30 lbs and be a great blocker for our return to a power running game, whole catching 28-35 passes and being a red zone specialist.

Honestly, being down on a kid who commits from LA cuz his 40 isn't .23 seconds faster. lol

 
He could be a little faster now and the time was electronic, he's likely somewhere in the 4.6 handheld range. He's obviously not a gamebreaker, but fill that frame out with a redshirt year and he's a big wr that can move the sticks and provide a good endzone target.
