Skin Testing - Changelog

zoogs

New member
Hey all, AR/Chad/Eric have graciously allowed me to to experiment on a copy of the new QB Sneak theme, entitled "QB Test" (edit: I changed it to "Skin Test" to avoid confusion, mostly by me). I'll be keeping a detailed changelog here.

My goal is to first do some fine-tuning to the current look, just to polish it up more while sticking to the same layout. Then I might move onto some look-and-feel modifications that are of a more experimental nature. I'm keeping this pinned, and edit this post and the next instead of adding new replies.

I also created another user account (username "secret"), so that I can make sure I'm not doing anything that affects how normal members see the site. So don't freak out about that.

Task list

-Resolve: Messed up floating elements on the "pages" (content area pushed down)

-Thread icons: what's going on with these? There are now a lot of odd variations. For example
t_read_dot.png
t_read.png
- both these seem to point to the same kind of thread (unhot, read). Odd.

-Remove text shadow (doesn't show in IE, anyway)

Changelog

Starting 10/13, marking all changes in with a comment containing my username (zoogies) for easy navigation.

ipb_style.css -

--10/12/2010--

#primary_nav: Fixed navbar scaling error (black background didn't extend to next line when window is made smaller). #body: removed Tahoma from the top of the font list. Looks more consistent with the fonts on the navbar, and the other font options are less heavyset.

--10/13/2010--

body .maintitle a : Text-shadow removed

#next_game: margin changed -3px to help it line up a bit better

#primary_nav: clear:both to account for floating scoreboard module.

div#categories: minimum width of 924px

#index_stats: fixed width 370px

table.ipb_table a(:hover) - experiment changing color/weight of link text on index and in forums. Too much red, and I think the forum headers look better unbolded.

**COLORS** section: changing row1/row2 backgrounds to contrast a little less.

Added "a, a:hover" definitions to make default link behavior undecorated, and have an underline when hovered upon. Exceptions (where there should not be an underline on hover) were in the edit/reply/delete buttons in thread view, as well as the primary navbar. Possible other exceptions.

Adjusted width of main area from 94% to 98% for some extra screen real estate. Two style definitions here: #ipbwrapper and #branding, both have to match.

Popup searchbar style adjusted, as well as position, so it looks offset instead of in line with the the navbar. This requires ipbwrapper to have position:relative.

--10/14/2010--

Changed link colors.

ipcontent.css

--10/13/2010--

Added overrides to .articles, .articles h2, .topic_buttons li(+:hover) to fix floating and button issues. Not sure if it changes anything else. Don't feel too easy about this. But it works for the pages so far.

ipbeditor.css

--10/13/2010--

#ipboard_body .ips_editor.with_sidebar .sidebar h4: removed margin and padding from h4, which prevented the 'emoticons' header in the editor from being lined up. Probably not intentional - header tags in HTML automatically have margin and padding applied by most browsers unless they are manually specified to be 0.

#ipboard_body .ips_editor.with_sidebar .controls,

#ipboard_body .ips_editor.with_sidebar .editor: changed margin-right to 197px from 200px

#ipboard_body .ips_editor.with_sidebar .sidebar: (the emoticons sidebar - changed border-left color so it would be more noticeable and replace the missing textarea border)

Added textarea definition, removing border and resize option in safari/chrome - except for fast-reply, where you can vertically resize it. Not that anybody would do this, but the resize icon makes it look a bit more like a text input box, which is a nice bonus.

globaltemplate

10/13/2010: logo block experimenting in "branding" section

boardindextemplate

10/13/2010: moved ESPN scoreboard to bottom of sidebar to see if it would look better

10/14/2010: made h4 already read forums to have a special class ('read-forum-marker' in ip_styles.css) to allow separate style definitions for read vs unread forum titles. Even if this is reverted, only the stylesheet would /need/ to be changed.

Folks, we need everyone's input on these, by the way. So whenever there is a new change posted here, please take a moment and load the QB Test for comparison with the QB Sneak skin, and let us know what you think of the proposed changes.

I'll start off - I really don't care for the new font. It's much more difficult to read for me.

Good morning, Gentlebeings. I still only see IP.Board Mobile and QB Sneak on the drop-down.

I also figured out that you have to right-click on the ESPN scoreboard and select "show all" to see the whole module. I was seeing only part of it this whole time and figured it was something that would get fixed later. I wonder of anyone else has that issue?

EDIT - regarding the Scoreboard: Every time I go to the main forum page I have this same problem. I'll take a screen shot of it when I get home, but basically what's happening is that my Flash player is zoomed in and I have to right-click and select "show all" every time. Is there any way to make Flash save that setting? It's pretty annoying.

I'm running Firefox 3.6.3 and the latest Flash player.

The Countdown Clock doesn't appear to line up correctly with the forum border. It's off by a pixel or two.

The font used for forum posts on QB Test is a little too small.

When I right click and select Show All, I don't see any change. Does it work only when there are scores? What does selecting that do for you?

We can change the size of the Scoreboard, but I don't see a way to have Show All automatically enabled. I suspect that's something that would have to be done by whomever coded that widget for ESPN - in other words, I suspect that ESPN coded it so that it has to be done that way. But I could be completely off-base; depends on what it does for you when it's selected.

Here is what I get.

***SNIP***
That has to be a browser issue. The second example is what I see everytime in IE. Either that, or some issue with the OS.

A long shot, I know, but try clearing the cache - let's see if the browser is rendering a cached, incomplete version.

The countdown clock box is the same pixel width in both skins, so they should not appear different (I didn't change anything there). You're right though, that it appears to be off by a pixel, with the border.

I didn't change the font size; I guess the other font is just naturally smaller. I took out Tahoma to see how that would look because Tahoma looked too bold/edgy. Here's a comparison, 14px (without Tahoma) on top and 13px Tahoma on the bottom:

That said, font is a relatively minor detail and I'm fine leaving it as is. I've never had an issue with the ESPN scoreboard in either skin, by the way...not sure what is happening there. What browser are you using? If you can duplicate it I'll check it out.

I haven't changed anything else yet and at the moment, I'm searching for the CSS that controls the Pages. Frank - are there CSS files for a "CCS" (content control system) under "My Apps"? Doesn't appear to fall under the look and feel category but maybe I just haven't found it yet.

I use Firefox both at work and home. I have no idea what the issue is. I'm sure it's flash-related. It is a flash module, right?

I just upgraded my FF here at work to 3.6.10 and it's still doing the same thing. Cleared my cache, same thing.

If I'm the only one having this issue then it's not a big deal.

It looks like the window where the scoreboard should appear just isn't big enough. That's my only thought. Does that make sense?

There is no CSS specific to the Pages module so far as I have been able to find. The template that controls it is in the Look & Feel. It's under the skin_ccs_global template - articlePages.
