Slowing or Stopping Personal Attacks

It seems to me that we've been getting a lot more personal attacks. Unfortunately, a lot of them result from "good" members attacking trolls (PastYoBedtime being the latest example). The problem is that it lends itself to a mindset that the members can have free shots. I think we need to put a stop to it. What I'd recommend is that when this occurs, we POST (not PM) in the thread to warn people that it is not acceptable to attack someone under any circumstances - even obvious trolls. Ask them to please use the Report button. And warn them that while we may sympathize, we can't permit an evironment were any personal attacks are permitted, and that we'll have to start taking action against ALL members who violate the rules, no matter their motivation.

I think if we do that for a week or so, it will help. But we'll still have to follow through and ding members that violate the rules after that week - even if they are good members and even if they are going after obvious trolls. And we'll need to respond to the reports, obviously.

My worry is that someday we're going to get someone who posts an unpopular opinion, and he'll get attacked for it. Someone who isn't a troll.

We've been known for being tolerant of all views, and I see the current environment as becoming, possibly, intolerant of those. I'd like to stop it before it gets out of hand.

Thoughts?

I agree and I've noticed a dangerous trend of it over the past few weeks. It's better to critize in public so everyone knows that enough is enough............even if that particuliar member doesn't like it.

Definitely trending that way. Good guidance and direction and which way to take this. Better to be proactive.

Yeah, I saw it - excellent post. I've dropped a few in various threads as well. Hopefully, enough folks will see them and this will tart getting reversed.

I think we can expect some blowback to the new crackdown, as in the Husker Psychology thread. I don't think we should take any action there, because it's important for the Mods team to stay above the fray in all of this, on the PR front. It's true that warnings only have been given for a number of posts as bad or worse. But, best to stick to our guns, and getting feisty with critics will only undermine attempts to ensure everyone respects the board rules [and the recent re-inforcing].

Much as it does tick me off a little that anyone would suggest "F#*K OFF" should be acceptable.

Perfect way to hopefully curtail this. It's something I have noticed and it's just getting ugly at times.
