Spring Position Battles - Quarterback

We are thin at the QB spot in my view with only TA, Fyke, Bush and POB and a transfer guy (I forgoet name) coming in the fall I recall. At this point, we certainly can't be said to be loaded. We would hate to move Bush to Safety (assuming he is fast and quick enough which I doubt?) and then see Tommy get injured, leaving us with Fyke and a green probable redshirt candidate POB). We could have two QBs get hurt in the first game - it happens - and a third go down in week three. At that point, we are installing a back up safety as a back up QB. We should keep no less than 5 QBs on the roster all with the ability to run the offense at a basic (Matt Turman for example) level.
So 4 deep at a position is thin?

I would hardly consider us 4 deep. Only 1 of the QB's besides TA has actual playing experience and that QB is Fyfe.

Very nice discussion in this thread. It will be interesting to see if POB ends up at #2 by August. I think if he's #2 or a coin toss with Fyfe, he needs to NOT redshirt this year. We all saw what happened with Taylor Martinez his senior year which paved the way for TA to start as a freshman. I'm not saying this will happen, but as much as TA likes to run the ball, the chances of getting banged up are pretty good. On top of that, if TA continues what he has done the past 3 years and uses bad judgment, Riley might be more inclined to trying out #2 who has the QB fundamentals down despite the lack of playing time.

I think with recruiting going the way we hope it is, fingers crossed, we can afford to name POB the back up and get him some reps early and often.

to be honest, if POB is the hot shot everyone thinks he is, he should be the #2 guy at least by mid season. besides, other than TA, who is his competition, really?

Also if that is the case, then we should see TA running more often because we will have a capable backup unlike last year so we won't need to play it safe with TA.

exactly.
this won't happen
Hunch or info?

If we are talking about POB being back up to TA, I think it is pretty plausible. If we are talking TA running more, I think that has to happen. The staff sees the need for him to do it and TA may just do it out of pure necessity not wanting to go out and throwing unnecessary INT's.

I don't understand not letting TA run for fear of injury. Running is his biggest strength. IMO, the entire defense slows down if they are afraid TA will take off running. When TA is standing in the pocket he is a turnover machine, so maybe the #2 QB is just as good as an immobile TA.

I'd bet money that Tommy will end up running at a very similar rate as last year. Remember that our offensive coaches barely even have a sniff of the idea of a running quarterback - they're old school, pro-style, west coast guys all the way. The fact that Tommy had the rushing year he did under Langsdorf, with an unexpected but pleasant amount of designed QB run game, is already a huge testament to our offensive staff trying new things and being willing to adapt their vision to their players, but to go any more run heavy at the QB position just because we think we might have a solid backup is a stretch in reasoning, imo. I'd look for our offensive gameplan and approach to be very similar to what it was last season.

so you are saying another season of pics and throwing more into coverage by TA? that would tell me the coaches didn't learn anything from last season.......i don't think their same play calling can be forgiven this season.....

Fyfe said there is a lot more read option this year. Had a lot more of it vs UCLA as well. The coaches didn't have time to prioritize learning/installing the read option much last year. Had all bowl practice and the off season now.
