What don't you understand? What big name assistants would have came and worked under Bo, being a new HC? Big name assistants would have been the only thing that could have improved our recruiting classes, his first two years. He now has a solid staff, who isn't looking to go anywhere, besides maybe Beck, for a HC gig. With the lack of talent we had in Bo's first two recruiting classes, as a whole, we performed much better than I would have imagined we did. Hell we still had a 10 win season last year, 4 more than I thought we would have won, due to the lack of talent on D.

We still don't have big name assistants, besides maybe Joseph and Kaz, but due to the style and the way we play, our recruiting has gotten much better.

I didn't understand why you brought up assistant coaches. A lot more goes into recruiting than just having good assistant coaches, so I was a tad puzzled by your emphasis on that.

Assistant coaches are the ones that actually do the recruiting, so I would say they are what makes it or breaks it a majority of the time.

 
I wouldnt be to worried about this as 70-80-% of kickoffs are touchbacks anyway, especially early in the year when its warm out.... If anything find a punt returner. I think we should start with someone who can catch the ball and then we can worry about whom is the best returner with the best speed. Pretty minor if you ask me...

I was wondering the same thing. If he means Martinez, I will pass. We don't need someone with fumbling issues returning punts lol. I like Martinez and all, but it would be a Niles Paul reoccurring nightmare.

I said no punts. I think he gets a shot returning kicks in the NFL. Less shiftiness needed to return kicks compared to punts. Get up to speed and go! I think he could be pretty good at it. I'm not suggesting he does it for NU.
Oh and it's not a stretch to say he could be the best on our team. Unless you forget the turd sandwich that was our return game last year.

I wouldn't be surprised if he played Special Teams in the NFL, but you didn't state anything along those lines on your initial post :)

Turd sandwich who was our return game last year? Abdullah, Turner, Bell, Marlowe? Those are the main people I remember returning kicks...

that's who I remember as well - and turd sandwhich is probably a pretty accurate description. first time in years i've held my breath, closed my eyes and asked my wife to tell me what happened after nearly every punt/kick. (sometimes she'd wait too long and i'd pass out - not sure if that was the large quantities of alcohol that it took to make it through last season, or the lack of oxygen - either way, b!tch move on her part)

NFL teams are allowed to have 45 active players on a gameday roster. It is HIGHLY unlikely a team carries a kick return specialist. This is even more unlikely since the kickoff changes and now nearly 50% of kickoffs are even returned. His only chance would be if he proved to be able to make a team as a 4th or 5th wide receiver and they happen to put him back to return kicks

A lot of NFL teams actually have return specialists. Josh Cribbs, Trindon Holliday, Devin Hester pretty much is, Denard Robinson could find himself in one of those roles as well.

Are you serious? Bill Belichic was one of the first coaches to draft a player JUST for special teams. There are quite a few that do now. Like the Redskins, Texans and Browns. Like Roger Dorn said above, Holliday is a perfect example.

More and more teams will continue to draft for JUST return specialists.

Cribbs and Hester are the "4th or 5th WR" I referred to. They are known for their return game but both are effective WR and aren't exclusively returners. Holliday is a perfect example of an exclusive return man, yes. But that is 1 out of 1700 players in the league, which leads to the "highly unlikely" probability I was referring to.

 
Martinez is fast, but he isn't Holliday fast. That dude can FLY, like Olympic Time Trials FLY.

I can see Martinez trying to become like Cribbs, a fourth or fifth receiver and maybe do special teams.

New England's kick returner last year was their best DB, Devin McCourty. Browns have their 2nd best WR. Redskins, Brandon Banks (I will give you that one). Texans, Jacoby Jones (their 2nd or 3rd WR). As I said above, 2 or 3 players (Banks, Holliday, and maybe one other one who I'm not aware of) doesn't make Taylor's chances likely. I said it's unlikely which doesn't make me incorrect.
