The originals were okay. TFA does it way, way better.
I think warm nostalgia feels is what gets the originals high on most people's lists. To be fair, they were clearly more groundbreaking for their time (especially technically) than TFA. Although I'm not too interested in comparing SFX. It's a plus, but movies can have groundbreaking production value and little else.

People who love the originals loved them when they came out and continued to love them. They have been my favorites (out of all movies) throughout my life and not because of nostalgia. There are dozens of movies that I loved as a child that I think are awful now. The Goonies and Star Wars and Indiana Jones are the only ones I can think of that I still love that stood the test of time.
