Tangent Thread - October/November 2017 Edition

I suspect his last advice to his players will be significantly different than the last coach.  It is too bad he got sucked into a bad situation.  I don't think he was probably informed fully of what the situation was.  But, in the final analysis his job is to show progress regardless.  That has clearly not happened.  I suspect the next coach will have an easier time with player transition because of a more classy exit on the part of the coach and also, the abject failure that has been seen this year.

He did a very good job of bringing back the Husker legacy of physical football, never fired a friend, and inspires passion.  He is probably the best I have seen at explaining a loss, and finding the silver lining in every dark cloud that comes his way, weekly.

Well look at it this way.

Guy is at job for 7 years.  Does average/avove average work.  Guy is a prick.  Constantly berrates customers, challenges his bosses and openly shops himself out for a new job.  Gets fired.

Replacement comes in with a load of experience, but the job has passed him by a bit and delivers below average/average work.  A pleasure to be around and always has a positive spin to put on things, gives his best effort even if it's usually not enough so after 3 years a change will be made.

Who are you going to miss as a person more?

Miss?  Depends which one I was closer with.

If all things were equal where I was not friends with either of them...I would miss neither and I would rip on the a-hole and not say anything about the guy that came and did a job like most people do.

 
I get what you're saying and I don't necessarily disagree.  But your stuck on the "f#*k him, he's not special" mentality.  Big picture, he's not.  But he is currently, for a couple more weeks, coach of the team I love the most.  And he did his job to the best of his abilities, his predecessor can't say that and neither can the man before him.  And he has done it in a classy way, something that is becoming rarer every year unfortunately.  I genuinely respect Riley and I don't say that with rose colored glasses, I liked his work at Oregon State.  Granted I didn't love it to the point I ever wanted or thought he would be here, I liked watching his Beavers beat USC on Thursday nights over Penny Pitchers at the Milligan bar.

So all in all, it's a "we're not mad, we're just disappointed" situation.  Don't confuse respect for praise.

 
If I was signing a card for him on his last day it would say "Enjoy your retirement!  Have fun"
