Tangent Thread - P&R Edition

CNN really rolled out this "Color of Covid" thing?
The fact that I can't stand Don Lemon aside... The data is incomplete so I would guess it's fairly skewed, but even when it's all said and done I'm guessing it will still show that minorities are more heavily affect than non-minorities.

"People of color are more likely to live in densely packed areas and in multigenerational housing situations, which create higher risk for spread of highly contagious disease like COVID-19," said Dr. Jerome Adams, the U.S. surgeon general, at the White House briefing Friday.

Adams has also noted that minorities are not more predisposed to infection "biologically or genetically," but rather they are "socially predisposed" to it.

New York City officials last week said black and Latino residents were dying at twice the rate of white people. In Chicago, more than 70% of virus-related fatalities were among African Americans — a percentage more than double their share of the population. Black residents in Milwaukee County, Wis., have seen similarly disproportionate rates.

President Trump took note of the disparity in death rates, saying, "It doesn't make sense and I don't like it" at his Tuesday briefing. The next day, he called the disparity "terrible" and added, "We are doing everything in our power to address this challenge."

The Detroit metro will be a nice example. As of today Wayne county has 61 deaths per 100K and is 40% black, Oakland county has 38 deaths per 100K and is 14% black, Macomb county has 45 deaths per 100K and is 9% black.

Demographics as of 2010 Census

Oakland Country population 1,202,362

72% White, 14% Black, 6% Asian, 4% Hispanic

COVID: 6021 cases with 458 deaths

Macomb County population 840,978:

85% White, 9% Black, 3% Asian, 2% Hispanic

COVID: 4251 cases with 384 deaths

Wayne County population 1,749,343 (includes the city of Detroit)

52% White, 40% Black, 3% Asian, 5% Hispanic

COVID: 13,741 cases with 1,070 deaths

There are NO good cops.

Ask one if there are bad cops in their department and you'll get, "Yes but we stay away from them". My next question is always "So tell me what you've done to stop a bad cop" and I've never gotten anything other than "crickets". When that happens I tell the cop in question that when he can tell me what he's done to stop a bad cop, then I'll believe he's a good one.

They cover up for each others misdeeds and then want us to think there are "good ones" out there. Accessory after the fact is a real thing for folks unless you're a cop.

Bohunk...just curious how many times you have had that conversation with cops to draw that conclusion...

Oh, and I think you are FOS and disagree

I too enjoy making sweeping generalizations off of entirely anecdotal evidence.

What you're saying is pure, unflattering extremism. Nothing more. It also suggests a complete disinterest in fostering meaningful, realistic change.

And this kind of talk is exactly part of the problem as well.

I have seen everyone of the following, on signs or in graffiti, on the coverage of the protests/riots the past week:

F*ck Cops

F*ck Blue

F*ck Pigs

Kill Pigs

Kill Cops

Kill all cops

F*ck 12

Kill 12

Pig Roast

187 (CA penal code for murder)

ACAB (all cops are bastards)

Only good cop is a dead cop

You may have seen others...

Nothing says 'fairness and equality for all' like wishing death on other human beings.

I posted about this in a separate Shed thread already, but I had a Facebook friend (fairly left extremist) say that "There is no such thing as a good cop. There are only bad cops and then cops that don't do anything about the bad cops."

I'm not sure where the cops that HAVE outed their colleagues come into play here but it's clear there are some people out there that don't want to have a real conversation.
