Tangent Thread - P&R Edition

None of this is true.

Yes it is. That, or you know some pretty spry 75 year olds. You can't possibly believe he has age related cognitive decline coming fresh off a vote for Joe Biden....

You're definitely not wrong with the bolded, but I guess I have a hard time visualizing the appeal:

- He'll be 78 and he's objectively unhealthy (admittedly eats like s#!t, doesn't exercise consistently, technically obese)

- He exhausted GOP officials with his behavior

- Policy-wise, and by most objective measures, he was an average to below average president. He didn't do well.

- Voters already decided he didn't do a good enough job in his first term to be re-elected to a second

- He'd be a guaranteed lame duck president

And then, anecdotally, I think he's mentally unstable.

I would not at all be surprised if he chose to run again, but I think he over-estimates the overall support he thinks he has. Trumpists are crazy and there are a lot of them, but Trump wore down and lost the very people who he actually needed to win an election. I don't see that group being overtly interested in him in four years.

I don't know how mentally unstable he is because of his age.... If you watch that Netflix series about him, it shows a lot of interviews from 30-40 years ago, and it's the same guy.

We'll see. Just observing him the last few years, I'd be shocked if he didn't run. The rest? You may be right, but a 4 year long campaign may stir up some support, especially if the economy fell off, for whatever reason.

It's quite possible he'll be in jail, or still in the midst of multi-pronged legal cases against him.  Assuming a couple Azerbaijanians haven't broken his legs or made him disappear.

This might hurt his numbers a little, but I think the base would still go for it.

Does anybody *really* think Trump is going to end up in jail? I'd be very, very surprised.

he has enough money to litigate everything until the dya he dies.  either that or settle out of court or manage to negotiate fines rather than jail time.    and there is always somebody who he will blame if those other things fail.

You could be right, but Trump seems to get around very well, and has a lot of energy for his age, and doesn't seem to show any cognitive decline.

....no cognitive decline?....Trump?

Edit- Actually “decline” might be an out here. His problem is that he’s extremely simple minded. Like really big, hugely simple minded...the simplest you’ve ever seen....it’s unbelievable how simple really....you’ll see.

The guy has three adjectives he uses, and he over uses them in the wrong tense. He’s a f#&%ing simpleton.

Donald Trump has sought he camera and microphone for 40 years, and if you watch old interviews he's never less than coherent and usually has a passable command of the language and a PR savvy message of whatever he's trying to sell.

He's definitely experienced a sharp decline. I'm not the first person to notice that his vocabulary has shrunk down to elementary school levels. Literally. He was never an intelligent guy, but now he essentially speaks like a child, with an immature temperament  to go with it.

When in doubt, I always like to revisit his 2019 "Windmill Speech" taken verbatim from the White House website:

We’ll have an economy based on wind.  I never understood wind.  You know, I know windmills very much.  I’ve studied it better than anybody I know.  It’s very expensive.  They’re made in China and Germany mostly — very few made here, almost none.  But they’re manufactured tremendous — if you’re into this — tremendous fumes.  Gases are spewing into the atmosphere.  You know we have a world, right?  So the world is tiny compared to the universe.  So tremendous, tremendous amount of fumes and everything.  You talk about the carbon footprint — fumes are spewing into the air.  Right?  Spewing.  Whether it’s in China, Germany, it’s going into the air.  It’s our air, their air, everything — right?

So they make these things and then they put them up.  And if you own a house within vision of some of these monsters, your house is worth 50 percent of the price.  They’re noisy.  They kill the birds.  You want to see a bird graveyard?  You just go.  Take a look.  A bird graveyard.  Go under a windmill someday.  You’ll see more birds than you’ve ever seen ever in your life.  (Laughter.)

You know, in California, they were killing the bald eagle.  If you shoot a bald eagle, they want to put you in jail for 10 years.  A windmill will kill many bald eagles.  It’s true.

And you know what?  After a certain number, they make you turn the windmill off.  That’s true, by the way.  This is — they make you turn it off after you — and yet, if you killed one they put you in jail.  That’s okay.  But why is it okay for these windmills to destroy the bird population?  And that’s what they’re doing.

AUDIENCE MEMBER:  Because they’re idiots!

THE PRESIDENT:  (Laughs.)  This is a conservative group, Dan.  (Applause.)  No, but it’s true.  Am I right?  (Applause.) I’ll tell you another thing about windmills.  And I’m not — look, I like all forms of energy.  And I think (inaudible) — really, they’re okay in industrial areas.  Like you have an industrial plant, you put up a windmill — you know, et cetera, et cetera. I’ve seen the most beautiful fields, farms, fields — most gorgeous things you’ve ever seen, and then you have these ugly things going up.  And sometimes they’re made by different companies.  You know, I’m like a perfectionist; I really built good stuff.  And so you’ll see like a few windmills made by one company: General Electric.  And then you’ll see a few made by Siemens, and you’ll see a few made by some other guy that doesn’t have 10 cents, so it looks like a — so you see all these windows, they’re all different shades of color.  They’re like sort of white, but one is like an orange-white.  (Laughter.)  It’s my favorite color: orange.  (Applause.)

One could argue that since he's a f#&%ing moron, and...

Every president looks like s#!t when they leave, whether it's 4 or 8 years.  You can't unlearn what you learn.  The job takes decades off you.

Yes, Trump has always been a moron. But if you watch videos of him from the 80s, it's clear he's become more of a moron in the past 5-10 years. I just scrolled up and I guess I disagree completely with BB on this.

Yeah, it’s a real head scratcher. Trump was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and has been absolutely convinced his whole life that he earned it, knows more than anybody else and it was all entirely deserved.  Hmmm....those people always seem to be such treasures? It’s a real conundrum.

Yeah, he was still a womanizing douche nozzle in the 80s with racist vibes, but he was far more coherent and with it. He actually formed complete and thought out sentences. Now he's your crazy uncle on the mental decline.

I'll fully admit Biden has slowed down since he was VP, but he's way more coherent then Trump and he doesn't blurt out every random idiotic thing in his brain.

I think Trump is much, much closer to his former (peak, I guess?) self than Biden. Trump is still able to speak off the cuff, even if it is ridiculous behavior.... Everything with Biden feels so prepared, and he still struggles at times. I'm rooting for him to hold on to what he's got, though. Not a fan of Harris.

That was pretty much my original point. Trump has never been brilliant, or really even remedially bright. So his mental decline, which he also has had, doesn’t seem to be such a stark difference. I agree that Joe has tailed off significantly more since his VP days but even now he is much sharper than Trump ever thought of being.

Every time anyone sticks up for Trump’s mental acuity or his character or really anything about him, my faith in humankind is reduced even further. Not to worry though, that faith is pretty much non-existent at this point. He is such a vile idiot my only possible takeaway is that anyone who supports him has to also be an idiot and/or vile person.
