Let's have a few Big Red W's this month, shall we?
Nebraska has a chance to do something this month they haven't done in seven years - win three straight games.
Nebraska's last three-game win streak ended in October, 2016. It was actually a seven-game winning streak to start the season, but of course Riley would go on to lose four of our final six games, including our last bowl game.
Obviously we had a chance to win three straight last week, but Michigan was not to be trifled with. So it goes.
However, October has gifted Nebraska with a real opportunity to win three in a row. Our opponents aren't that good, and while we aren't very good, either, this is still our best shot to get that elusive three-game win streak.
First up, Illinois in Champaign. The Fightin' Illini are 2-3 with losses to Kansas, Penn State and Purdue. While Kansas and Penn State aren't bad, Purdue is beatable. Despite that, Illinois was just bounced by the Boilermakers in West Lafayette this past weekend, 44-19. Illinois opens as a slight favorite in this week's game, but we could definitely win this game.
After Illinois Nebraska has their first bye week of the season on 10/14, and we follow that up with two straight games at home.
Northwestern also has three losses, including 24-7 to Rutgers and 38-14 against Duke. Both teams enter this game coming off a bye week, so both should be rested and relatively healthy. Either team could be slightly favored in this game, but it's definitely a game Nebraska could win. We could be 2-0 in October heading into our final game...
...another home matchup, this time against the afore-mentioned Purdue. While the Boilermakers just smacked Illinois around, they have a couple of lopsided losses to Fresno State and Syracuse. Purdue faces Nebraska sandwiched between their two toughest games of the year - Ohio State on 10/14 and Michigan on 11/4. Not only is this a beatable team, they may be a bit beaten up by the Buckeyes, and we may catch them looking past us to Michigan. Another winnable game.
And, if we slip up against Illinois but somehow manage to beat NU Lite and Purdue, our next game is against current 2-3 Michigan State, who appears to be reeling after the firing of Mel and his Lil' Tucker. Sparty has two wins against unimpressive opponents, followed by three bad losses to Washington, Maryland and Iowa. Sparty only reached double digits in one of those games, and all three were losses by 10 or more points.
So there you have it, sports fans. We're 2-3 and we just got smashed at home by Michigan.
But maybe there's better days ahead.
