The "I Found A Spammer" Thread

Back when I still had the hops to play volleyball we'd register as "Bye." Every once in a while we'd win on a forfeit when the opponent didn't show up, but after a year or two everyone knew the joke. After that I think we were "Safe Sets."

Give them props for trying something clever, I guess. This time the registration name is "Administrator." IP is 60.242.167.100, resolves to Sydney, Australia.

No posts or links yet, but I'm pretty sure we're safe in nuking them.

So here's why they registered with that name. I logged in as my test account and found a PM from this joker. I put in a report HERE.

Is there any way we can nuke these PMs? And should we put an announcement out that these PMs are NOT from us at HuskerBoard?

I'm thinking we should

- Ban his a$$

- Take some kind of action against his scam site. There has to be legal recourse for this, right?

- Put out a forum Announcement on this, pronto

My test account has not had a PM from this guy yet though.

I'll post an announcement in a moment about this.

As for legal action, I'm guessing the cost would be far too high to justify it. If it's from another country, that would really make it impossible.

If the spammer is from a "western" country, it's possible that reporting it to the ISP could result in some action, but I wouldn't hold my breath. And the report would have to come from Chad as the owner.

By the way, I just checked - there is no setting that we can implement to stop PMs until after X number of posts. It's an all or nothing proposition.

Thanks AR! FYI, I was looking at the announcement and clicked the link by accident. So I edited it and took out the link.

Damn! I should have caught that - thanks for removing it.

I'm going to play with the style sheets and see if we can't make the announcement titles stand out a bit more. I'm not sure that folks notice them as they look now.

zoogies already flagged "clutchmarketing" as a spammer, but they need to be banned. I moved all their posts to the Junkyard.

Looking back through the new arrivals I noticed sunlightspraydryer, whose IP resolves from Beijing. I doubt they're setting up an account to talk about our Spring match vs. Tianjin Bridgestone.

Another Beijing Husker fan. palletracking joined last night and put a bunch of links in their profile. I nuked the links and flagged him as a spammer.

CynthiJ says "she" is from Los Angeles, but "her" IP is Indian. I flagged her as a spammer as well, and removed links from sig and profile page.
