Would anyone consider Bobby Newcombe as a "minor" bust? He was very highly touted at QB, and then couldn't win the starting job and played a fairly prominant role at WR. I like Bobby, and he was important to our Big 12 Title, but he never panned out as the next Tommie.

(I remember getting into a heated argument with a buddy when Newcombe and Crouch were pretty much completely even... really still competing for the same job... at the time I argued that Crouch would prove the superior college quarterback. Bobby then went thru a whole series of 'head games', leaving Lincoln etc. - if I remember correctly, where it felt like he wasn't ever in it for the team).

I think Newcombe was named the starter and Crouch went home crying to mommy.

I can't say if Miami or FSU were interested, but he was one of the top rated "dual threat" quarterbacks in the nation when he was recruited. That's why he is one of the biggest busts in history. He was not listed as a pure option, which may have been the problem. He never ended up being any good at either running or passing. He sucked at everything. He still does. Ask UNC.

Syracuse recruited him...he was hyped up mostly by us because we had just experienced Jammal Lord's first year as a starter, we were just trying to polish him into something he wasn't.

I believe he was one of the first. Another that never recovered from the same injury was Lanny Hopkins. He had so much promise. At that time I was wondering what the heck the strength staff was doing to those guys.

Yeah, he had a good season in 96 for a frosh, but he also quit on the team. He never delivered on his hype. Some hoser said Lucky earlier. Lucky has produced far more than Evans ever did.

I heard that Joel Makovicka kicked D'Angelo's a$$ in practice or in the locker room........I can't remember where I heard this from.

I didn't base my "minor-bust" label on comparison to Frazier, but to the fact that he brought a TON of buzz, and didn't even play the position that he was supposed to be our "savior"........now, of course, he played behind the Heisman winner, so I am not saying that he wasn't a fantastic athlete....just not the QB that the hype built him up to be.

I wasn't referencing you at all. When my friends talk sports it always seems like someone throws out the "hes no Tommie frazier" phrase. Thats all...i actually heard that earlier this weekend when talking about a few past QBs.

good point... i had forgotten about Eric's meltdown...if memory serves, I believe he was first, and then it switched, and Bobby went all the way back to New Mexico, and had to be talked into coming back by his high school coach. (either way, two big egos i guess...)

 
I dont think you can really call any player that Billy C. recruited a bust since the previous staff could not develop talent.for examle Barry Turner freshman all american actually got worse under Billy. but ,if i were to say one player would be Beck. :bang
