The "Outrageously Idiotic Past the Point of Comprehension" Statements Thread

Dirk Chatelain ‏@dirkchatelain 3m

Teaching a sportswriting class this semester at UNL.
I mean, the guy constantly gives back to his J-School, does round table discussions, alumni events, and now is teaching there. Maybe it's time we retire the "Dirk hates Nebraska" platform.
Where did I say he hates Nebraska? I just don't think he's that good of a writer.
He's a good writer. I'd wager he'd get picked up for national work before Sam, who is a better writer.

Dirk makes a living stirring the pot about Nebraska and people call him on it. I see no problem with this.
He makes a living writing about NU.
Sometimes he is critical of NU. And people hate hearing bad things about NU, because the truth is scary to some.

He stirred the pot more often when he was doing this for the dn as an undergrad. That was a case you are describing.

Getting mad at Dirk is akin to shooting the messenger.

By that rationale, there are tons of Dirks on this board, if thinking Taylor was detrimental to Nebraska.

I understand the Dirk kerfuffle here, I haven't been immune to getting irked by him. But he doesn't have an anti-Nebraska agenda. He wouldn't do the things he does off the clock if he did.

And if Google was my friend I could find said article, did the OWH bury it?

You misspelled "I was wrong."
Well you butchered "I now see your point"
Jesus, Polo, this schtick is getting tiresome.

I said Dirk makes a living stirring the pot about Nebraska.

You disagreed, saying he writes the truth, and people are scared of the truth.

I showed you where he was denounced for yellow journalism.

You counter with "but people on HuskerBoard" and tried moving the goalposts mentioning volunteer work.

I really don't care if you can't find that article. I'm not going to dig it up for you, and I'm not going to gift the OWH with a click for that crap.

It's a damn good thing this conversation is in this thread. It'd get quoted here if it wasn't.

I tried to move the goalposts by bringing up my original point that he doesn't hate Nebraska by showing examples of the things he does FOR Nebraska?

He writes a lot of things about Nebraska. Better?

We started this conversation because you disagreed with me that Dirk stirs the pot. You're moving the goalposts by trying to go back to a previous comment, not the comment you and I are talking about.

I'll agree with you that Dirk is a good writer, and that he does a lot of things for the J School. That has zero to do with my comment, and what we're talking about.

Dirk doing things for J School isn't a refutation of his pot-stirring. It's a different facet of the man. He's not one-sided, one-minded.

Well and my original comment was a reply to a comment that was basically "LOL Dirk is teaching a writing course!" Since we agree that he can be a good writer, hopefully we can agree that this dismissal is perhaps an overreach of the white hot hate of all things Dirk Chatelain.

Further, that white hot hate is probably a little misguided. That's all.

People dislike Dirk for the articles he's written, one of which I've linked to. That is not misguided, that is evidence-based.

You're basically arguing that Dirk isn't 100% "bad," a point that doesn't need to be made. What Dirk does outside of his job as a sports writer covering Husker football is irrelevant in the context of Husker football. The place we're having this conversation just happens to be a message board for Husker fans.

Mussolini made the trains run on time. That doesn't erase the things he did wrong.
