The "Outrageously Idiotic Past the Point of Comprehension" Statements Thread

People dislike Dirk for the articles he's written, one of which I've linked to. That is not misguided, that is evidence-based.

You're basically arguing that Dirk isn't 100% "bad," a point that doesn't need to be made. What Dirk does outside of his job as a sports writer covering Husker football is irrelevant in the context of Husker football. The place we're having this conversation just happens to be a message board for Husker fans.

Mussolini made the trains run on time. That doesn't erase the things he did wrong.
The ethics of journalism we are discussing compels me to tell you that you didn't in fact link the article in question. You linked a sbnation article talking about the article in question. When I asked if the article existed anymore (and it might not, I've wasted far too much time trying to find the damn thing) you gave me a flip "I'm not helping the OWH linking that".

Anyway yeah I get why people here get ruffled by the guy. I just find it odd that it was THAT article that was the straw. The player he was talking about took far worse abuse on this site than that article gave after the Wisconsin game. The same site of Husker fans and alums you're talking about. It's just funny sometimes because he's out to ruffle in his opinion pieces and they're giving him what they want.

Are you disputing that Dirk wrote that article? Because that may be the ultimate goalpost move.

Or are you tacitly agreeing that it was? Because later you say "I just find it odd that it was THAT article..."

Which straw are you grasping at here, the "the article doesn't exist" straw or the "that article was like something a person who hasn't been educated on the ethics of journalism would write" straw?

Dirk is far more likely to say positive things about Nebraska than Sipple is likely to say negative things about the program/head coach.

I see a lot more anger about the former person than the latter. It's not hard to guess why.

No sh#t, Sherlock. It's a message board comprised of Nebraska fans.

I about laughed out loud when I read that, carlfense. You know where you are. I can't believe you even wrote that.

Again, there's some misconception that it's somehow bad or wrong or... whatever... that people here pump sunshine about Nebraska athletics. This idea that we need to correct people who celebrate beating FAU, or be sure to balance out team pride with all the negatives is just bizarre. This isn't the Nebraska Rational Society message board, it's for fans. "Fans," short for "fanatic."

You can't reason with fanatics. You shouldn't even try.

Meh. I'll pick reality based journalism any day.
That's what we were talking about, right? Journalists? Or are we talking about fanatics? Something is off if the twain are the same.

Just to be clear, I love you guys. I think you're part of the heart and soul of this board. Two really important members that I like a lot.

But really, you gotta know your audience. You're telling the wrong crowd to ramp down the enthusiasm. They don't want to hear that.

Dirk and reality are not always sympatico.

I doubt anyone hates Dirk because of his "negative" articles but more in the tone in which they are written. He comes off as condescending and like someone on a witch hunt.

I have read Sipples "positive" articles and I know people on this board have made numerous comments about him being on Bo's jock.

But lets face it. No matter how bad your team is, you are going to like the guy pumping sunshine a lot more than the guy writing doom and gloom.

And I know polo and carlfense live outside the local area, but Dirk comes on local radio shows all the time. I like hearing him there - he knows his stuff and he can talk authoritatively on the team. He also has a very different tone about the team - realistic, not sunshine-pumping, but definitely not negative.

I'd rather get the realistic take than false optimism generally.

So you think Dirk is realistic?
