The weird username changes

What's your guys' take on these?

Bucky wants to be Excel. He seems quite serious about this.

huKSer wants to be '

beanman wants to be Turd Ferguson (knapp notes a previous Turd Ferguson request was denied).

We usually seem to do these no questions asked -- but they are also usually make sense. Example: NU-Bo to Thanks_Tom RR http://www.huskerboard.com/index.php?/topic/67111-name-change/

This will be Bucky's second name change and third name. Not inclined to agree to that. As for the other two - no. You can't search on ' in Members, and we don't want some parent upset that their kid is exposed to "Turd" in every other post.

Another board I've been on implemented a system where members had to garner X-amount of "signatures" to get their username changed. Maybe look into doing something like that so we don't get novelty changes? That and you have to keep the name for at least a year. If you want to be known as Excel for a year, be my friggin' guest.

I'd skip the signature requirement - too much bother for us to monitor. But I like the idea of one change per year - although, that would mean we'd need a thread here detailing each change and when it occurred to know.

Accountability is also on his third name - although they're not very different. accountability, Mr. Accountability, Count 'Bility. Thanks_Tom RR, if he ever changes again, would also be on his third username...is he out of changes, too? I agree that Bucky's request feels different, but we can't end up inconsistent either.

I like the one change a year idea too. We wouldn't have to keep track -- just check the display name history and if there's been a recent change, tell them to wait. I believe accountability went 8-9 months from Mister to Count, which I guess is pretty reasonable.

I don't understand the name change stuff to be honest. Then everyone has to figure out who you are again, I don't think they should be able to change their names at all to be honest. Think about the handle before you pick it?!

It seems like a fad right now, too. We had very few name changes for a long time, but now it seems like every week someone thinks it'll be cool.

This reminds me of the pony fad, the gang fad, and kinda the yearly Starting Lineup fad. Seems like an off-season "I'm bored" thing, something we've inadvertantly encouraged but that now we need to put the brakes on.

zoogies' point about consistency needs to be minded, though, and especially with Bucky. I think if we put the brakes on this, we need to let him be the last change. He gets the impression he's being persecuted often, and telling him no, after several others just changed names, would fuel that. No reason to make him feel persecuted.

What if we put a cap on the total number of name changes a member can have, like five total, ever.

I think Lance hit it on the head - it's a fad that's going around. I think we can let it run its course. Grant the ones that seem legit, deny or ignore the rest. Pretty soon, like the Pony nonsense, it'll run its course and we'll be back to normal.

Agree and he probably going to start whining soon....

Well, I posted the above before seeing Bucky's latest post. Seems he's serious, so I set out the parameters for any change by anyone - a year for the new name, certain names won't be permitted, etc. We will probably want to pin something in the Board Feedback to memorialize it for everyone to see, so, in addition to the one-year requirement, no symbols, must be family-friendly, anything else? Post requests in a thread in the Board Feedback or do we want to let them PM us? Anything else?
