Things to do in/around San Diego

Here's a thread for those of you who may not know Southern California too well. I lived there for four years while in the Marines (not saying I know everything to do or see, however) and I thought I might just throw a few things out there. Feel free to add anything you want! GBR!!!

Here's The Fisherman in San Clemente, while not in San Diego county it is on the very southern border of Orange County. Great seafood and atmosphere. Right on the Pier in San Clemente.

The Gaslamp in San Diego is pretty neat. Has about anything an out-of-towner could want.

Those are just a couple of my favorite things from my time living out there. There's so much to do in San Diego and Orange County. I've decided to drive out instead of fly out. Hope to see you all there and have safe travels.

 
Having lived in San Diego/San Clemente for a few years back when I was in the Marines, I can tell you that the firsherman's restaurant is good, but it's also about an hour drive (In southern Cali traffic) from San Diego, and not sure if I'd say it's worth it or not.

When you're in San Diego, the Gaslamp is a blast, it's akin to the haymarket in Lincoln, but bigger, better, and with more bars, specifically, I loved going to a bar called the yardhouse, which has something like 100+ beers on tap, as well as a place called 'dicks last resort' where the wait staff isn't polite or curteous...they're dicks to everyone, lol.

Old town is a good time, it's a bit more touristy with a lot of little shops and such

There's a huge pier/wharf shopping/eating area right off of downtown on the water, I don't remember what it's called exactly, but there's some nice upscale restaurants and such there, as well as stuff for little kids to do during the day.

If you're planning a family trip, Legoland is about a half hour drive north, and is a lot of fun, if you feel like making the 2 hour drive to LA, Univeral Studios and DisneyLand are always good ones to talk up.

 
My favorite Mexican food spots from y 15+ years living in San Diego:

best inexpensive Mexican food (no servers): El Indio (located near downtown and Little Italy)

best sit-down Mexican food: Casa Guadalajara (located in Old Town)

If you're looking for good bar scene, try Gaslamp or Pacific Beach. PB has a younger demographic to it.

I'd hit the taco trucks. Carne Asada...........hmmmmmmmmm.

 
Have a beer at the KC BBQ. It was the bar in Top Gun where Goose is playing the piano.

For great food and atmosphere hit up Croce's. It is run by the widow of the singer.

The zoo is always fun and I'm sure the December weather in San Diego will cooperate and while at the zoo make sure to walk around Balboa Park.

The Hotel del Coronado in Coronado is a good place to visit.

Yeah and just to add there is a Texas, Iowa, Kansas, and Virginia Tech bar in PB. Probably a few other schools, but I can't remember right now. Most people are really nice in PB so I'm sure they'll welcome husker fans if you ever want to stop in, but if you have kids with you...most won't let you in.

1) Georges at the Cove. La Jolla Incredible, 30 minutes from stadium.

2) "Top of the Hyatt"

Manchester Grand Hyatt. Next to Convention Ctr. Bar/Lounge 40 stories about the bay.

We spent afternoons in Temecula when we were out to Cali for the Rose Bowl and USC games. It is the 'wine country' of SoCal and we did wine tasting in numerous wineries. It's about 60 miles from downtown out there off the Interstate. Easy drive and a fun getaway. There is also a big casino there too and some nice golf courses - all away from the city if you want to take a break.

My favorite in Temecula is Stuart Winery that specializes in port wine. The owner autographed bottles and inscribed Go Huskers and Go Big Red on them. Looking back maybe that was the kiss of death but those bottles we've donated to fundraisers here have been very popular.

 
You've gotta blow a day at the beach. We like to go to Mission Beach when we're there. Take a spin or two on the old wooden roller coaster, and there are plenty of shops to rent bikes, rollerblades, surfboards, etc. from. If you get hungry hit Roberto's Taco Shop and get an order of taquitos. All of this is in one convenient spot, so you can park your car and have a great time without blowing much cash at all.
