Triaging the QB room

Again, I'm not in the backrooms and practice fields so I can only guess how close Rhule is to Satterfield's decision making.  But given they both bear responsibility for hanging their first season on Jeff Sims, I have to think they're as frustrated as we are. We are no longer joking about run only offenses and maybe a wildcat, but the pass plays they are asking our quarterbacks to perform are not complex or risky: they are plays every player who want to be a quarterback needs to execute on a semi-reliable basis, and absolutely necessary if we want our running backs to ever see an open space. We can live with the incompletions: Osborne QBs were mostly 50% guys, but the interceptions and fumbles are incredibly bush league. We have three quarterbacks who can't handle the job basics, and while I can always think of a play that MIGHT have worked better, I can't think of an offensive design that will protect their weaknesses and score points at the same time.

This is hardly an endorsement of Frost, who simply gets worse over time, but don't you think this team could be winning these games with Ryker Fyfe or Noah Vedral operating the exact same system?
I said something similar in another post.  While I still disagree with the call knowing poor routes and decision making further impacted the play, the fact that we do not have a QB on the roster that can routinely make rudimentary throws.  There is no reason to not be able to make a simple out route throw or at a minimum get the ball in front of a receiver on a fly route.  Not into the arms of the loan high safety looking like a center fielder or a punt return man....We truly have no passing threat.  None. I do think Noah or Logan would be better in this O.  AM would probably have thrived as well. While also a TO machine, he could complete routine passes.  This might be revisionist history, but I seeem to remember NU in 95 either neither fumbled or lost a fumble.  I also seem to remember in Jason Peter's book he talked about getting after his own team mates in the locker room at half time for screwing up. I think with even "average" QB play we are sitting at 7-8 wins easily.  Gotta shake the portal tree.  I don't see next years QB on the roster.

I don't think the Maryland db tried to jam Coleman as much as Coleman ran straight into him as if he was going to block then realized he was supposed to run a route.
Great point.  He did get stonewalled which would lend credibility to Rhule previously saying how well he was blocking.

Casey Thompson is 10 times the QB that Sims is and Frost left him here. That he left after Rhule was hired is not on Frost.
Casey Thompson had NFL WR Trey Palmer to throw to.  Palmer would hep any QB look good.  Thompson couldn't run to save his life.

In his only 3 games at FAU he threw 5 INT's...Take out Monmouth and he had a QBR of 5 against Clemson and a 12 against Ohio. Even keeping Monmouth, in 3 games he rushed for a whopping 2 yards...His only passing TD's (5) were against Monmouth...At NU he finished with -21 yards rushing, a 64 QBR and 17 TD's to 10 INT's.....  He wasn't good.  Palmer bailed him out.

Man, you might want to get your memory checked, just saying. That or you're trying way to hard and making crap up trying to defend your position. Either way

You could argue Casey made Palmer look good.

"He (Palmer) was limited to one catch against No. 17 Illinois - which entered the game with the nation's No. 1 pass defense - as Nebraska struggled after starting quarterback Casey Thompson was knocked out of the game in the first half. Thompson also missed the Minnesota game, when Palmer caught five passes for 37 yards. With Thompson still out, Palmer caught five passes at No. 3 Michigan but was limited to 12 yards. Thompson returned against Wisconsin, when Palmer caught four passes for 47 yards, including a pair of touchdowns." https://huskers.com/sports/football/roster/season/2022/player/trey-palmer

And surely Casey's low rushing numbers had nothing to do with the fact he was sacked 24 times behind the worst offensive line in modern Nebraska History. Fun fact, he only had 56 total carries on the year. That means sacks accounted for 43 percent of his carries. But yeah, rushing is the way to judge his QB talent.   .

Casey Thompson battled through injuries to start 10 of 12 games at quarterback in his first season at Nebraska in 2022, missing the Minnesota and Michigan games due to injury. He completed 63 percent of his passes (173-of-274) for 2,407 yards and 17 touchdowns, while adding five rushing touchdowns. Thompson had three 300-yard passing games this season, becoming only the fifth quarterback in Husker history with three 300-yard passing games in a season. He has also threw at least one touchdown pass in each of his 10 games.

Thompson's 2,407 passing yards ranked seventh in school history while his 17 touchdown passes tied for 10th on Nebraska's season chart. Thompson ranked 12th nationally in passing yards per completion (13.9) in 2022, 14th in passing yards per attempt (8.8) and 29th in passing efficiency (150.1).

Thompson completed 25-of-42 passes for 355 yards and one touchdown in his debut against Northwestern. His 355 passing yards led the nation in Week 0 and were the most passing yards by a Husker in his debut and the most passing yards in a season opener in school history. Against North Dakota, Thompson threw for 193 yards and two touchdowns. He accounted for four total touchdowns against Georgia Southern, throwing for 318 yards and one score while setting a career high with three rushing touchdowns. He passed for 129 yards and one touchdown against No. 6 Oklahoma. Thompson completed 18-of-27 passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns against Indiana, while adding a one-yard rushing touchdown.

Thompson led Nebraska's comeback win at Rutgers. He completed 24-of-36 passes for 232 yards with two second-half touchdown passes as the Huskers overcame a 13-point halftime deficit. The next week at Rutgers, Thompson threw for 354 yards and two touchdowns, averaging a whopping 22.1 yards per completion. Thompson threw for 172 yards and one touchdown in less than a half while facing the nation's No. 1 pass defense against No. 17 Illinois, but an injury kept him out for the final series of the first half and the entire second half. The injury also kept him out of the Minnesota and Michigan games. He returned to start against Wisconsin and was Nebraska's leading rusher and passer, throwing for 120 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 33 yards. In the season finale at Iowa, Thompson led Nebraska to a win by completing 20-of-30 passes for 278 yards and three touchdowns.

Also are you confusing QBR with his completion percent???

This begs the question - how is the QB room getting better in a practical way after a combined 5 turnovers on Saturday?? :dunno

"We may not be playing at an elite level right now (TG: award winning understatement of the year)," he said, "but y'all don't see what I see as far as how they come to work and the energy that they practice with and the preparation that they do. The teammates they are. It's really cool. This group is getting better and better and better, and our best days are ahead of us and I think they're coming soon. I can't wait to see all this come to fruition, this hard work."

Another way of saying that is Casey could actually throw deep to open receiver and complete the pass to allow Palmer to bail him out.  That would be nice to have this year.   (And no I don’t think Casey is 10 times the QB but he was better last year than what we have this year and that’s not arguable)

Quite frankly, also I’m tired of talking about a QB’s rushing stats too until the core competency of throwing passes is up to a college P5 upper half level first.

The best days are coming when they no longer see the field at QB for NU.  Satt is blowing smoke.

I mean what do you want him to say?  Should he has said "Our QB room is a complete dumpster fire and I can't wait until next year when we have 2 QBs out of the portal and these clowns are gone"?

95% of these pressers are coach speak.  You can sometimes get good nuggets from Rhule, but most is just fluff.  Husker fans digesting and analyzing everything that is said does no one any good.

I think it's being brought up because what the hell would this offense be doing without a homerun deep threat receiver for Casey and without a quarterback run game?

The latter is more or less the only way we ever get chunk plays this season.
