The final word
***I really think Joe Ganz has the potential to ignite a fire in this offense on Saturday if he can get off to a quick start. Ganz brings an added dimension of mobility we have not seen in the West Coast offense under Bill Callahan in four years, and I personally am excited that he’ll get a chance to start on Saturday.
***Sam Keller is a class act in so many ways and I can’t say enough how professional and courteous he was to deal with on a weekly basis this season. Every game, whether it was a win or a loss he was always willing to take the tough questions. In a lot of ways, he did his best to keep things together in very adverse times here in Lincoln.
***It’s amazing to think how far Mark Mangino has taken this Kansas football program. It was just a couple of years ago when he was on the hot seat and thought to be on his way out. But somehow, some way, Mangino weathered the storm and here the Jayhawks are at 8-0. Mangino should honestly be a guy whose name is up for bigger jobs in my opinion, but it’s sad his physical appearance will keep him from getting some of those opportunities. The bottom line is the guys is a great coach and probably one of the better evaluators of talent in the Big 12 Conference.
***Marlon Lucky is quietly one reception away from breaking Johnny Rodgers record for most catches in a regular season. With three games left, look for Lucky to potentially finish with 70 catches, right now Lucky leads all running backs in the country with 55 receptions.
***With the recent defections in the Nebraska recruiting class, it makes you wonder if NU regrets not taking Westside tight end Tim Biere. It would not surprise me to see the Huskers try to make a late run at Biere, especially if a coaching change is made at the end of the season.
***I’ll be honest, Dan Hoch visiting Iowa caught me off guard, but in the end I think he’ll stick with Nebraska.
Quick recruiting notes
Cameron Meredith - When Kyler Reed was on Big Red Wrap-up this week, he talked about how he was hearing it from kids in his school about why he'd want to go to Nebraska. He's not the only one.
According to his mom Katherine, Cameron is getting the same sort of treatment from a lot of the kids at his school. She said the kids at his school are mostly Pac-10, and especially USC, fans and that they rib him and frequently ask him questions about his decision to play for the Huskers. It must have been downright brutal for Will Compton and Blaine Gabbert after Missouri lit up Nebraska.
Doug Rippy - After Rippy told me that he still kept in touch with some of the old "core group", I asked him if he thought Nebraska had any chance to get them back if a new staff were named. He said, "As far as D.J. (Woods), I think it's possible. He's just kind of weighing his options. I don't know about Blaine (Gabbert). He may have closed the door (by then)."
D.L. Moore - I talked to D.L. this week and he no longer seems to be a possibility for Nebraska. He is having a big senior year with 979 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns through nine games. He's taken officials to South Carolina and Colorado so far, and his next will be to Purdue. Illinois is also coming on strong recently.
When I asked which of his considered teams he's seen on TV and which have impressed him he said: "Really, I can say both South Carolina and Colorado. The reason Colorado has impressed me is because they're so young, and I like the way they're stepping up and winning big games. With South Carolina, with the things they're doing in the SEC they have to bring their 'A' game to every game. I'm impressed with them as well."
Chris Little - I also spoke with this California linebacker prospect this week to see if he was still planning to officially visit Nebraska in early December, and he said "Yes". He did say that he was most likely going to have to reschedule his Arizona official set for mid-November because it will conflict with his playoffs. When asked about if coaching changes would have an effect on his decision, Little said, "That's not going to affect me at all."
Basketball notes
Everyone recognizes that even with its storied history, it's still difficult in the best of times to get top football recruits to come and play in Lincoln. The Nebraska basketball staff may have an even bigger hill to climb in its efforts to get premium prospects to commit to NU. And the most highly-coveted and hard to find recruits for basketball programs across the country are quality big men.
So far, Nebraska is still trying to find some size to fill the available scholarship or two that they have available for their 2007 class. Nebraska has targeted several candidates with not much success to this point:
6-10 Orlando Allen - Officially visited Nebraska, but ended up committing to Oklahoma.
6-11 Gene Swindle - After re-opening his recruitment after committing to South Florida, Nebraska was on his short list. He just eliminated the Huskers from consideration.
7-foot Garrett Stutz - Unofficially visited Nebraska, but NU didn't make his final four.
6-9 Colton Iverson - Officially visited Nebraska, but ended up committing to Minnesota.
6-9 Dee Proby - Officially visited Nebraska, but currently has Oklahoma State in the lead.
One other prospect that Nebraska is trying to get in on an official visit is 6-foot-8 power forward Dwight Miller. I talked to Miller's mentor Frank Rutherford this week and he told me that Miller had just scheduled his second official to Pittsburgh. His first trip was to Rutgers. Rutherford said that Miller will be taking more official visits, but they haven't set those up yet. Nebraska remains in strong contention to get one of the remaining visits from Miller this fall.
As other possible targets become known, we'll keep track of them as well.
Genuine Interest?
It’s a bit of a surprise to me, but it looks like offensive lineman Vaughn Dotsy will take an official visit to Nebraska at some point. The big man from California claims "15-16 scholarship offers" and, outside some of the schools out west, he said he likes Nebraska and LSU best.
"I’ve been talking with coach (Dennis) Wagner," Dotsy said. "I’m going to try and get out there and see what it’s like. They have a good program with a good reputation. They are kind of having a down year. We’ll see what happens at the end of the season."
Dotsy added that if Nebraska does change coaches down the road, he’d likely wait and take a look at who they bring in. He said he’d still be interested in visiting.
Why the surprise for me? In an interview with Dotsy a couple of months ago he pretty much told me that he couldn’t see himself living in Nebraska. He said one of his coaches lived for a while in Omaha and told him that "there isn’t anything to do out there."
With Dotsy Nebraska has a good chance to get a visit but a slim chance to get his commit.
Back in the Hunt for Arizona running back
It looks like running back Jamal Womble is starting to come back in the picture for the Huskers as well. He’s already visited both Boston College and North Carolina and has the Tar Heels holding a slim lead.
He’s scheduled to visit both Wisconsin and South Carolina during the month of November and wants to get a visit set with Nebraska as well.
Womble’s teammate, Jake Muasau, claims only one offer...and that’s from Nebraska. Muasau told me that he and Womble are trying to get a visit set up to Nebraska for November 30. Muasau said that Nebraska still leads "big" with him but he’s expecting several more offers to begin rolling in once he has his ACT scores.
If Nebraska makes a coaching change, you can almost immediately scratch Womble off the Husker list of possibilities. He has developed a great relationship with both Randy Jordan and Bill Busch. He said, "It would be hard to look at Nebraska if they got rid of the coaches, because I’d have to develop that chemistry all over again and that takes time."
I predict that Womble will commit somewhere by the end of November and will not make it to the Nebraska campus before doing so.
Nebraska takes the lead
One good possibility to make up for the recent loss of Darius Parish in Nebraska’s class of 2008 is Quentin Toailoa.
I spoke to him this week and he is still on a high from his visit to Lincoln a couple of weeks ago.
He said, "So far, my leader would be Nebraska because I had a great visit. It surpassed my expectations. The fans are incredible. Even with their team losing by double-digits in the fourth quarter, the stadium was still packed. No one left."
"My parents loved it too. My mom is the one who wanted me to take the visit to Nebraska and I found out why. She knew all about the tradition up there. Now, I do too."
Toailoa also had time to bond with Nebraska commit Simi Kuli on his trip and said the two became fast friends while in Lincoln. Toailoa added that he thought Lincoln was the "perfect" fit for him.
It’s a long ways until signing day but, right now, the Huskers are looking pretty good to get this kid’s commitment. He admitted that he wants to take a few visits, however, before finalizing a decision.
James back on the radar
As most probably have seen by now, I had a chance to speak with four-star all-purpose back LaMichael James this past weekend and it appears that with the de-commitment of Jonas Gray, the Huskers are looking at new targets at the running back spot.
It’s been asked to how James compares to other running backs that Nebraska has either recruited or brought in over the last few years. All and all, talking to some of our guys on the ground in Texas, they all responded that though he’s not 5-11 or 6-0, he’s a very put together kid. A lot of people think his recent rankings increase from high three star into the Rivals250 was long overdue. I can’t disagree there.
Now in terms of his recruiting process, that’s where things get interesting. At one point, James looked pretty close to a decision. That was right after the Huskers received their second commitment from Gray and looked done at the position. After the two official visits to Minnesota and TCU, it appeared he was going to just go ahead and make the decision between those two.
With the Huskers new interest, whether that has had the biggest effect or not, James is backing off a bit and wants to wait before going too far. He’s backed off of favorites and doesn’t really have any new visits set up. However a stop in Lincoln on Nov. 10 may be in the cards and looks possible.
The one thing he did mention to me that wasn’t in the article was about the possible coaching changes at Nebraska.
“I don’t want to be stuck without a coach who was recruiting me,” James said. “I guess I’m going to go and see.”
Regardless, James seems very interested in getting up to Lincoln to finally check things out up close. We’ll see how this develops as we go along.
A big target
I had an update up today about Juron Criner and his coach just raved about him when I had a chance to speak with him.
Coach Matt Jenkins said that Nebraska hasn’t officially offered, but that if they did, Criner would be one to watch early in his career. Don’t be surprised with the way his senior season is going and his improvement in speed earns him a Nebraska offer. It also looks like a visit is in the works and could be officially set up relatively soon.
Also in the story was that Criner’s teammate Raevon Samuel was no longer with the team. Coach Jenkins confirmed that for me and wouldn’t comment further. As always, I will respect his wishes and that of the player in not speculating further about an obviously sensitive situation. Let’s leave it at that.
Etc.
*** There were multiple reports surfacing over the last week or two that Darius Parish had de-committed from Nebraska. I spoke with him very briefly this week and confirmed that with him as well. Parish seemed to be a soft commitment from the beginning and I think you’ll probably see him elsewhere at another school by Signing Day.
*** Someone asked about Trevor Robinson visiting Missouri. I asked him about that when I spoke with him last week and because of plans that Saturday, he was unable to make it to Columbia for the Tigers’ game against Iowa State. He also seemed pretty set on Michigan, Nebraska, and Notre Dame and I think everybody else, today, is on the outside. With that said, we continue to hear that a visit is possible before the end of the season but at the same time, nothing has been confirmed by Trevor himself.
*** It’s not just limited to HI.com, but no one can seem to reach four-star athlete Adrian Bushell. I did talk to his coach this week and he seemed to believe that Bushell was aware of the possibility of a coaching change in Lincoln, but also said that he hasn’t heard that a visit is out of the question. Once we get him on the phone we’ll get a better picture, but it sounds like the season is the focus.
*** On the subject of recruiting boards, we’ll be updating those as soon as things slow down. Since so much has changed in such a short period of time, we’ve decided to wait a little while until we get a chance to make a change that won’t be obsolete by the time the next morning rolls around.
I'm always checking out the JUCO ranks, as I know the Huskers will continue to dip into that pool.
When I talked to Maurice Gray the other day, he told me that Butler was loaded on the defensive line.
"We have some good D-linemen." I figured he was just talking, but I looked and he is right. Remember, we are talking about one team out of over 150 JCs in the nation - granted Butler is one of the very best.
Below are the ones I checked out - the stats are for six games and they have played seven.
The first DL is not in the Rivals.com database, so he might be a freshman, but Zach Clark is having a solid year. He has 24 solo tackles, 17 assisted, 12 for loss, 3.5 sacks and one forced fumble.
Tyler Jessen (6-2, 300, 4.9) is in the database but no stars. His numbers are better in tackles, but not in sacks. He has got 31 solo tackles, 13 assisted, 7 for loss, one sack and two forced fumbles.
Swanson Miller (6-4, 330, 5.1) has four-stars and definitely one to watch. The database is not showing any offers, but I would wager that is incorrect. He's got 20 solos, 18 assists, 5.5 TFL, 3.5 sacks and two FF.
Marcus White (6-4, 245, 4.55) plays WDE and his year is going along nicely - thank you very much. He might not have the bulk but he must have some quickness off the edge, as he leads Butler with 12.5 sacks and has 53 total tackles with 10.5 for loss and he must hit fairly hard, as he has caused four FF.
There is still a full three months until the official signing day and it will give the coaches time to pick up one out of a high school or a JC. Of course, some of the JUCOs will be signing in December and that might have to speed the process.
More on El Camino duo
El Camino (Simi Kuli and Justin Thompson) is playing Orange Coast (Shaun Mohler) this Saturday. Simi will undoubtedly hook up with Shaun after the game and talk some. That is the plan.
Simi still is having teams call him regularly and he is telling them with respect that he is a Husker. An unnamed power keeps calling, but he is telling them thanks but no thanks.
Justin really wants to see a Pac-10 school before he makes up his mind. He is starting to get a good feeling for Nebraska. It helps that Kuli and Justin are running stunts at practice and Kuli is telling Justin that it is "just like being a Blackshirt Justin."
They both called and talked with coach Buddy Wyatt this week and both were to be calling Tom Osborne on Wed night.
