If you haven't seen it yet, take a look at the "Taliban" post in the BS forum. During the debate, "Vince" made a couple of remarks to strigori. The first was rather innocuous. Vince said, "Trust me, warrantless eavesdropping works and you cannot nor will not change my mind because you are speaking from opinion. where I'm not." Again, not a problem in and of itself other than the arrogance of tone. However, later in the debate Vince said to strigoir, "Not being a smart-a$$, but your posts show your opinions are based on what little you know. For you and others that think like you......that's a great thing. Trust me!"

I didn't like the way the conversation was going - I was afraid someone was getting ready to pop off. In an effort to defuse it I replied to Vince's post by saying, "This is coming perilously close to a personal attack. Try refuting his statements rather than casting aspersions. If you can't, you've lost the debate. If you can, there's no need for your statement above."

I don't want to engage in a flame war. At the same time, he's making it pretty clear that he doesn't give a damn about the Board's rules. So - how should this be handled? Thoughts?

 
Here is how I see it. Get rid of him, show him the door, ban his stupid arse, trump him out of this place. Don't give him a reason either. Close his account ban, his IP whatever. I looked at that whole debate and he comes off as a complete turd. But like I have said before I have a quick trigger finger and have been known to just delete posts that I think are stupid so you may not want to listen to me.

Although I do think he can take his "I know what is going on and you don't" crap some place else.

How dare you use your "ADMIN" powers to boost your ego, you darn grocery store clerk. Paper or Plastic?

 
First off the guy is full of sh#t.. second watch him like a hawk. he will cross the line that he has been teetering on. Then drop the hammer.

 
I don't think Vince has caused us any trouble before, so I'd let him off with a warning and close and move the thread. Perhaps the user hit a touchy nerve with Vince and he reacted like this. I'm not saying it warrants personal attacks but you never know. Unfortunately, if he continues to buck the rules, then the ban hammer must come down!

could have been the whole assault by hooker thing that made him mad. gotta pick your name and live with the consequences. IDK. He definitely has pushed the envelope a couple of times.

After I read this post and posted I went to the BS and read that thread.. BUTTMUNCH much more like he is johnny ringo the egoistical sadsacker.

He is hanging around the thread this am waiting to see what is happening. ha ha

 
This has been one of "those days". I got on and started reading this thread this morning, and got pulled away. First chance I've had to get back.

First of all - thanks for the thoughts. Here's some information and some more of my thoughts that may or may not make any difference:

1. While I can't be sure, I think "Vince" is posting through an anonymizer service. His IP history shows that he's posted from no less than 23 different IP addresses. It certainly isn't that his ISP is changing his IP address frequently - the addresses are all over the place. Some are 75.x.x.x, others are 71.x.x.x, 216.x.x.x, 151.x.x.x, etc. I bring this up only to point out two things - banning the IP address could block a legitimate user who's IP address was "appropriated" by the service, and that if or when he is banned, all he has to do is open a different email addresses and he can re-register and we won't know it's him - until he says something. That, of course, will almost certainly happen - the "fun" for him will be knowing that we can't block him, and then bragging about it. Which means that we would have to constantly ban his new accounts and delete his posts - at least until he runs out of free email accounts. And that could be a long time.

2. I have an email for him that appears to be legit, and it shows he has an Alltel.net account. But from our experience with the HPH douche bags, it's pretty clear that even when we can present proof that someone's intent is to harass the board or even temporarily shut it down, providers aren't going to do much - perhaps send a warning. And the problem even if Alltel does that is that using an anonymous proxy system makes it damn near impossible to show that whomever is posting is doing so through the ISP...or the same person.

3. I don't think a warning increase will do anything but escalate the issue - he's pretty much has indicated by his actions that he's going to do what he wants.

4. I don't care about his attacks on me - it was certainly fun to tweak him and get a rise, but my main reason for asking your thoughts was to make sure that I was getting unbiased views of what occurred. But what worries me is that it, to me at least, it is clear that if any of us attempt to control his behavior on the Board, he is going to do the same thing to whomever tries.

So, where does that leave us? Frankly, I don't know. If we ban him (either now or for some other offense), we need to be prepared to start having him hose the board with crap that we'll have to clean up, and it will take quite a while, I would guess, before it ends. If we don't, we're going to have to be prepared for him to essentially say or do what he wants. Six one way, half-a-dozen the other.

So - given all that, any changes in your thoughts?

We cant let them push us around. IMO if we ban him and he starts some sh#t then we deal with it. I think keeping him around with him thinking that he can get by with anything is a worse outcome.

Ill stand behind you whatever is decided but I say f#*k that douche.

 
Guys - thanks again. After thinking about it:

1. I'm not going to ban him until or unless he pulls this on any other mod or admin or he breaks a rule. As I said, his attacks on me don't matter to me. But if he shows that same attitude when someone else tries to reign him in, or if he goes after another member, that's that.

2. I'm going to do a little research on those IP addresses he's used. I want to see whether they resolve to a particular host - specifically, AOL or other provider that uses NAT and a proxy. If not, then if we ban I may ban by ALL those addresses. Haven't decided yet - it might be helpful to ban by just account name. He may make the mistake of re-registering using one of the "flagged" IP addresses, which will make him easier to spot. Since this kind of thing (called "onion routing") requires either open relays or users on the Internet that install the proxy software, it may be possible to block at the IP class level without blocking too broad a swatch of IP addresses - I'll have to check the board software to see whether that's possible.
